Mail Art Remediation in a New Media Environment

Abstract:

Mail art, a form of visual arts, which has been evolving from half of the 50´s of the last century, has appropriated technological infrastructure of the post system and its agents – postage stamp, rubber stamp, envelope, mail box and postman. Its primary aspects such as creation of network, emphasis on the act of communication and interaction, but also denial to commodify the art, resistance towards institutionalisation, or forming the community, activism, performativity and together with artworks open for edits, are identical with categories, which are characteristic for new media. Connecting the art, technologies and socio-cultural concepts makes from it a direct precursor of artist practice based on network and digital technologies. The goal of the thesis is to find remediated pattern of the mail art in the environment of net-art works. By synthesis of selected available resources, it provides an insight into researched form of art as journey, which led from private correspondence within small community up to unlimited international network, using media of information communication technologies. The main subject of research is how the change of technological platform effects appearance of mail art in its new, remediated space. This is researched by correlation analysis of new media artworks. Significant outcome is the revelation of the performative feature of works, manifesting itself in the implementation of hacktivism and virus, as postponed action of the code in the environment of the electronic online communication.

Mail art, forma výtvarného umenia rozvíjaná od polovice 50. rokov 20. storočia, apropriovala technologickú infraštruktúru poštového systému a jeho agentov – poštovú známku, pečiatku, obálku, schránku a poštára. Jeho primárne aspekty ako vytváranie siete, dôraz na akt komunikácie a interakcie, ale aj odmietanie komodifikácie umenia, odpor voči inštitucionalizmu, či formovanie komunity, aktivizmus, performatívnosť a diela otvorené editácií, sú zhodnými kategóriami charakteristickými pre umenie nových médií. Spojenie umenia, technológie a socio-kultúrnych konceptov z neho činí priameho predchodcu umeleckej praxe založenej na sieťových, digitálnych technológiách. Práca si dala za cieľ nájsť remediovanú podobu mail artu v prostredí net artových diel. Syntézou vybraných dostupných zdrojov otvára náhľad na skúmanú formu umenia ako na cestu, ktorá viedla od privátnej korešpondencie v rámci malej komunity, až k bezhraničnej medzinárodnej sieti, využívajúcej médiá informačných komunikačných technológií. Základným predmetom skúmania je vplyv zmeny technologickej platformy na podobu mail artu v jeho novom, remediovanom priestore. Ten je nahliadaný prostredníctvom korelačnej analýzy diel umenia nových médií. Dôležitým záverom je odkrytie performatívnej stránky povahy diel, prejavujúcej sa v implementácií hacktivizmu a vírusu, ako odloženej akcii kódu, v prostredí elektronickej online komunikácie.
