Quality of work and family relations (with emphasis on social support) and their impact on the elimination of stress in Prison Service staff in the Czech republic

Abstract:

This thesis is a part of a broad-based research project of the Center for the complex psychological research of stress, which is based on cooperative efforts of ten students from the Department of psychology at the Masaryk University. The common aim of the research is a detailed analysis of the effects of stress in the Prison Service staff. The theoretical part deals with definitions of the concepts of social protection and social support, stress in social interaction, with characterising the prison environment in the context of relationships and lifestyle in terms of attitudes towards their own health and habits that are beneficial or harmful one’s health. The empirical section focuses on the analysis of the relations of anticipated social support, prosocial characteristics and lifestyle with a frequency of occurrence of distress symptoms in terms of reduced resistance to stress. We have found out that people with whom the adaptive forms of prosocial characteristics, such as autocratic behaviour, selfishness, humility or excessive criticism occur, are better suited to withstand stresses. It has been shown that individuals from the research sample who regularly practice and maintain healthy eating habits seem to be more resistant.

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca je súčasťou široko zameraného výskumného projektu Centra pre komplexný psychologický výskum stresu, ktorý je postavený na tímovej spolupráci desiatich študentov Psychologického ústavu Masarykovej univerzity. Spoločným cieľom výskumu je detailná analýza pôsobenia stresu u zamestnancov väzenskej služby. Teoretická časť sa zaoberá vymedzením pojmov sociálneho prostredia a sociálnej opory, stresu v rámci sociálnych vzťahov, charakteristikou väzenského prostredia v kontexte vzťahov a životným štýlom v zmysle postojov k vlastnému zdraviu a zdraviu prospešných či zdraviu škodiacich návykov. Empirická časť sa zameriava na analýzu vzťahov anticipovanej sociálnej opory, prosociálnych charakteristík a životného štýlu s frekvenciou výskytu symptómov distresu v zmysle zníženej odolnosti voči záťaži. Bolo zistené, že ľudia, u ktorých sa v adaptívnej forme vyskytujú tieto prosociálne charakteristiky - autokraticizmus, egocentrizmus, skromnosť, kritickosť- sú lepšie schopní odolávať záťaži. Ukázalo sa, že jedinci z výskumného vzorku, ktorí pravidelne cvičia a dodržiavajú zdravé stravovacie návyky sa javia voči záťaži odolnejší.
