P. G. Wodehouse and the English Gentleman Character

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je dokázat, že postavy P.G. Wodehouse představují anglického gentlemana v satirickém podání. Pomocí popsání hlavních časových období, které ovlivnily kulturní a historický vývoj tohoto společenského postavení, jsou hlavní prvky aplikovány na postavu gentlemana z Viktoriánské doby.Jakožto atraktivní téma, koncept anglického gentlemana v podání Wodehouse pravděpodobně ovlivnil českého autora Zdeňka Jirotku, jehož román Saturnin je v této práci analyzován. Krátké dotazníky vyplněné na Friern Barnet School v Londýně přiblíží názor na existenci anglického gentlemana v dnešní době.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to prove that P.G. Wodehouse?s characters represent the English Gentleman class, yet in a concept of a satire and parody. Describing the three crucial periods of the historical and cultural development of this social rank, the specific features are applied on the Victorian Gentleman.The idea of the English gentlemanliness and the concept of P.G. Wodehouse?s characters seems to inspired the Czech author Zdeněk Jirotka, whose novel Saturnin is analysed and described in this thesis, too. The short survey from the Friern Barnet School in London shows the opinion about the English Gentleman?s existence nowadays.
