Olfactory communication of bats

Abstract:

Tato práce shrnuje dosavadní poznatky o pachové komunikaci letounů. Čich je pro tyto noční tvory velice důležitý a zprostředkovává informace, které nejsou jinými smysly dostupné. Netopýři užívají čich k určení členů kolonie, jejich pohlaví i sociálního statusu, ale i k určení zdravotního stavu jedince a tudíž jeho reprodukční schopnosti. Pro samce jsou pachové značky velmi důležité při značení teritoria a vábení samic, pro samice zase při péči o potomky. Netopýři mají různé žlázy a struktury určené k produkci, uchovávání a rozptylování pachu. Komunikace pomocí pachu se v poslední době dostává do popředí chiropterologických výzkumů a ukazuje se jako velmi významná.

Abstract:

This thesis summarize findings about olfactory communication in Chiroptera. The sense of smell is very important for these nocturnal animals and it transmits information, which no other sense can do. Bats use the sense of smell for identifying members of the colony, their sex or social status, but also for determining the health condition and thus the reproductive state. For males scent marks are very important since they mark their territories and court females, for females during nursing of her young. Bats possess different glands and structures that are used for the production, storage and display of scents. A lot of research based on communication with the help of the sense of smell has been done and it seems to play a major role.
