The influence of stress on the microbiome and the consequences for the organism

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá střevním mikrobiomem a jeho rolí v tzv. ose střevo-mozek. Zaměřuje se zejména na to, jak je střevní mikrobiom ovlivňován působením stresu a jak tento vliv může vést ke změně chování hostitele. První část shrnuje poznatky o chemických, nervových a imunitních drahách na ose střevo-mozek. Následně je popsáno, jaké děje probíhají v organismu v reakci na stres. Další část práce se zabývá studiemi, které zkoumaly vliv stresu na mikrobiom a důsledky tohoto vlivu pro imunitní a nervový systém. Práce naznačuje, jakým mechanismem může narušení střevního mikrobiomu stresem vést k aktivaci imunitního systému hostitele a k případné psychické poruše. V závěru jsou uvedena probiotika a prebiotika, která jsou zkoumána pro svůj možný pozitivní vliv na psychické zdraví.

Abstract:

This bachelor´s thesis looks into the gut microbiome and its role in the gut-brain axis. The focus is especially on the influence of stress on the microbiome and how that influence can result in the changing of the host behaviour. The first part sums up the knowledge about the chemical, neural and immune pathways on the gut-brain axis. The response of an organism to stress is also described. The second part of the thesis reviews studies that examined the influence of stress on the microbiome as well as the consequences of this influence for both the immune and nervous systems. It indicates how the disruption of the microbiome caused by stress can lead to an activation of the host immune system and to a possible mental illness. The thesis also mentions how both probiotics and prebiotics are being examined for their potentially positive influence on mental health.
