Afrofuturism as a legacy of the futurism in electronic dance music

Abstract:

Práce hledá spojitost adorace zvuku techniky u futurismu a elektronické taneční hudby (EDM). K tomuto účelu prozkoumáme pojem Marka Deryho „afrofuturismus“ a zkusíme jeho původní aplikaci na černošskou science fiction a kyberkulturu rozšířit i na elektronickou hudbu, k čemuž nám pomohou práce Kodwo Eshuna a Steva Goodmana pojící se k tomuto tématu. Posléze jej použijeme jako hledisko, z kterého budeme sledovat vývoj EDM. Začneme u jejích kořenů v jamajské „Bass Culture“ a přes milníky jako je vznik detroitského techna se dostaneme až k anglickému rave a současnějším žánrům. Pokusíme se ověřit na kolik je spojitost různých fází a druhů EDM s futurismem obhajitelná. Tím u minoritních i majoritních žánrů elektronické taneční hudby prověříme platnost domněnky o přítomnosti ozvěn futurismu a vlivu africké diaspory. Předmětem zájmu tedy nebude samotný vývoj EDM, jako spíše podrobení tohoto vývoje examinaci za pomocí hledisek estetiky afrofuturismu a „Black Atlantic Culture“. Pohled zatížený tímto technokulturním diskurzem by nám měl umožnit nalézt nové rozměry výkladu působení různých vlivů na EDM a její zvukovou krajinu a v neposlední řadě ji snad i legitimizovat jako významný projev vlivu technologií na kulturu, který si zaslouží být podroben i českému akademickému zkoumání.

Abstract:

Thesis is exploring connection between admiration of sound of technology in futurism and dance music (EDM). We will examine Mark Dery's term “afrofuturism“ and then we will try to extend its original use from black science fiction and cyberculture context to the field of electronical music. Our discussion will be based on Kodwo Eshun's and Steve Goodman's papers related to this topic. We will try to explain the EDM development from the perspective of “afrofuturism“. We will start with its roots in Jamaican “Bass Culture“ and then continue to milestones such as the emergence of Techno in Detroit, Rave in England and also more contemporary genres. Our goal is to examine the relevance of corelation between different phases and genres of EDM and futurism. Therefore we verify the validity of the presumption that echoes of futurism and influence of african diaspora is present in major and also minor genres of EDM. We will not concentrate on the evolution of EDM itself. We will explore the evolution of EDM from the perspective of futurism aesthetics and “Black Atlantic Culture“ instead. This technoculture discurs enable us to find new interpretations of different influences on EDM and its sound scape. At last but not at least we could legitimize EDM as a significant result of technology influencing culture that earns even czech academical attention.
