Empress Matilda: Womanhood and Queenhood as Illustrated in Penman's Novel

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje snaze císařovny Matyldy, dcery Jindřicha I., o získání anglického trůnu, a to převážně v letech 1135-1141. Zkoumá důvody, pro které Matyldě nebylo umožněno stát se právoplatnou anglickou královnou, a to jak pohledem spisovatelky Sharon Kay Penman, tak také soudobých kronikářů a historiků. Pozornost je tedy zaměřena na panování mužů i žen a všeobecnou pozici žen ve vrcholném středověku. Důležitou součástí práce je analýza jednotlivých překážek, které císařovna měla překonat, chtěla-li usednout na anglický trůn. Jednou z nich bylo její ženství, které značně omezovalo Matyldinu snahu o politické působení. Navíc se ale objevily další faktory, které hrály důležitou úlohu v jejím neúspěchu. Mezi tyto patřilo například manželství s normanským hrabětem Geoffreyem z Anjou, neuspořádaný vztah s církví a v neposlední řadě také samotný Matyldin charakter a jednání. Závěr práce zdůrazňuje nejvýraznější poznatky ohledně Matyldina marného snažení o usednutí na anglický trůn.

Abstract:

The paper examines grounds of Henry I´s daughter, Empress Matilda, failure to become a lawful English queen, her effort dating predominantly from 1135 to 1141. Matilda´s endeavour is explored through the historical novel When Christ and His Saints Slept by Sharon Kay Penman, as well as through the view of medieval chroniclers and contemporary historians. Attention is paid to the overall position of aristocratic women in the High Middle Ages, and then to specific properties kings and queens should possess in order to rule effectively. In its later part, the thesis concentrates on all the mistakes Matilda made that closed the door to the throne for her. Except her womanhood, the reasons behind her failure were her complicated relationship with the Church, as well as her matrimony to Geoffrey of Anjou and her demeanour that much undermined her royal claim. In the conclusion, the fundamental and paramount findings about Matilda´s situation are presented.
