The Influence of Social Role on the Way of Speaking: Speech Behaviour and Speech Habits of 2008 Presidential Candidates John McCain and Barack Obama

Anotace:

Táto diplomová práca analyzuje vplyv sociálnej role na charakter prejavov prezidentských kandidátov v USA v roku 2008 Johna McCaina a Baracka Obamu. Zároveň sleduje znaky správania sa v prejavoch, tzv. speech behavior, a návyky v prejavoch, tzv. speech habits. Ako prvý sa definuje žáner politického prejavu a jeho podžáner predvolebného politického prejavu, následne sú označené hlavné aspekty analýzy ako sú sociolingvistické faktory, vplyv formálneho prostredia a rečové prispôsobenie, tzv. speech accommodation. Analyzovaný text sa skladá z piatich prejavov Johna McCaina a piatich prejavov Baracka Obamu prednesených v rozpätí volebného roku 2008. Prejavy boli vybrané na základe kritérií reprezentatívnosti daného obdobia a kandidáta. Z vybraných prejavov bol pre každého kandidáta vytvorený korpus, ktorý bol využitý v kvantitatívnej analýze. Táto analýza poskytuje informácie o frekvencií výskytu kľúčových slov a zámenných odkazoch v kandidátskych prejavoch. Kvalitatívna analýza pozoruje rečové stratégie používané kandidátmi.

Abstract:

This thesis analyzes the influence of the social role on the character of speeches of the 2008 presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama. At the same time speech behavior and speech habits are observed. First, the genre of a political speech and its subgenre of a pre-election political speech are defined, and then the sociolinguistic factors, the influence of the formal setting, and speech accommodation are identified as the main aspects of the analysis. The text under analysis comprises five speeches by John McCain and five by Barack Obama in the span of the election year 2008. The speeches have been selected upon the criteria of being representative of the period and of the candidates, and constitute the data from which two corpora respective of the candidates have been created for the quantitative analysis. The quantitative analysis provides information about the frequency of occurrence of key words in the candidates’ speeches and the occurrence of pronominal reference. The qualitative analysis observes the discourse strategies employed by the candidates.
