Modern slavery practices in fast fashion: a case study of Shein

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá praktikami moderního otroctví v odvětví Fast Fashion, neboli rychlé módy, konkrétně na příkladu čínské módní společnosti Shein. Podle odhadů je dnes na světě až 50 milionu otroků, a produkty jejich práce se v rámci mezinárodního obchodu dostávají do celého světa. Konkrétně v odvětví Fast Fashion hrozí především riziko nucených a dětských prací, jakožto praktik moderního otroctví. Cílem práce je tedy zhodnotit, zda Shein některé z nich uplatňuje, přičemž práce konstatuje, že v dodavatelských řetězcích Sheinu dochází k nuceným pracím. K závěru práce dochází aplikací obecných definic těchto praktik na konkrétní případ Sheinu, na což práce čerpala informace ze získaných dat z terénu výzkumníků či novinářů, stejně jako na základě vyšetřování Sheinu americkými zákonodárci či médii.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the practices of modern slavery in the Fast Fashion industry, specifically through the example of the Chinese fashion company Shein. It is estimated that there are as many as 50 million slaves in the world today, and the products of their labor are trafficked internationally. In the Fast Fashion sector, there is a particular risk of forced and child labor as a practice of modern slavery. The aim of the thesis is, therefore, to assess whether Shein rehearses any of these practices, and the thesis concludes that forced labor does occur in Shein's supply chains. The conclusion is based on applying general definitions of these practices to the specific case of Shein, for which the thesis drew information from data collected from the field by researchers or journalists, as well as from investigations of Shein by U.S. lawmakers or the media.
