Manipulation and disinformation in information space during the COVID-19 pandemic: a case study

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce zkoumá, jakými způsoby byly šířeny dezinformace a konspiračních teorie v médiích v době pandemie Covid-19. Nejasné okolnosti jejího vzniku, způsob prevence proti tomuto onemocnění a další zprávy, které se dostaly do povědomí široké společnosti, poskytly vhodný základ pro vznik mnoha konspiračních teorií. Tyto alternativní scénáře průběhu celé pandemie ukazují, jak jednoduchá může být manipulace velké části populace. V první části práce je představena pandemie a její průběh ve světě a v České republice. Následně jsou představena jednotlivá média, která jsou mezi lidmi využívána pro šíření konspiračních teorií a zneužívají tak nedostatečné mediální gramotnosti svých recipientů. Představenými sociálními médii jsou nejnavštěvovanější dezinformační weby v České republice v roce 2021, dále Facebook, jehož aktivními uživateli jsou v posledních letech spíše lidé středního věku a sociální síť X, dříve Twitter, která svým konceptem umožňuje uživatelům šířit jejich sdělení v krátkých, na počet znaků omezených příspěvcích. Cílem práce je poznání smýšlení respondenta, skrze případovou studii dané osoby, která dezinformacím obsaženým v sociálních médiích podlehla a nechala se jimi ovlivnit.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis examines the ways in which misinformation and conspiracy theories were spread in the media during the Covid-19 pandemic.The unclear circumstances of its occurrence, the method of prevention against this disease and other news that became known to the general public provided a suitable basis for the emergence of many conspiracy theories. These alternative scenarios for the course of the whole pandemic show how easy it can be to manipulate large parts of the population. In the first part of the thesis, the pandemic and its course in the world and in the Czech Republic are presented. Subsequently, individual media that are used to spread conspiracy theories among people and thus exploit the lack of media literacy of their recipients are presented. The social media presented are the most visited disinformation websites in the Czech Republic in 2021, Facebook, whose active users in recent years are more likely to be middle-aged people, and social network X, formerly Twitter, whose concept allows users to spread their messages in short, character-limited posts. The aim of this thesis is to understand the mindset of the respondent, through a case study of a person who succumbed to the misinformation contained in social media and allowed themselves to be influenced by it.
