Abstract:

Pohled na legie a legionáře se v průběhu let značně měnil od úcty v období před druhou světovou válkou, přes částečné zapomnění a odraz ideologie v období komunistické diktatury až po jisté znovuobjevení a vědeckého postupu při odhalování tohoto tématu v novodobé české historiografii. Problematika legionářů a legií je již poměrně dobře zpracována a to jak co do šíře zpracovaných témat, tak i hloubky do které se historické bádání dostalo. Samotné Československé zahraniční vojsko skýtá pro historika doslova ráj. Přesto celá řada témat stále zůstává neotevřena a další témata nabízí použití jiných metod a pohledů. Na první pohled se dle názvu této práce může zdát, že se jedná o velké téma, které již bylo mnohokrát a dostatečně zpracováno, ale z pohledu statistického zpracování tomu tak není. Při shromažďování údajů pro samotný výzkum a porovnání oficiálních statistik pro zjištění množství legionářů v Československé armádě vyplynuli z analýzy zkoumaného vzorku tří set osmdesáti dvou legionářů velmi zajímavé informace. Zjistili jsme, že u ruských legionářů došlo k výrazným změnám v hodnostním zařazení po přechodu ze zajetí do legií. Až 41% poddůstojníků bylo zbaveno své hodnotnosti a u důstojníků byl tento poměr až 50%. Toto zjištění odpovídá povahám legie jako revolučního vojska a to zejména legie ruské. V případě legií francouzských a italských byly tyto změny zanedbatelné. Tato zjištění také odpovídají stavu a náladě v ruské legii, kdy se chtěli svým revolučním způsobem vypořádat se vším starým, co pocházelo z monarchie. Samozřejmě se nemohli zbavit všech důstojníků, ač se mnohdy jednalo jen o jednoroční dobrovolníky, neboť měli oproti běžnému mužstvu například větší předpoklady pro výkon důstojnické funkce vzhledem ke svému dosaženému, byť mnohdy nevojenskému vzdělání, lepší předpoklady pro důstojnickou funkci. Výše uvedená zjištění bude potřeba v budoucnu rozšířit na větším vzorku legionářů a vyvodit z nich patřičné závěry na důslednější analýze. Dle tradice je Československá armáda v 20. a 30. letech 20. století popisována jako legionářská. Tato tradice byla v posledních letech historickým bádáním nalomena a na armádu se pohlíželo jako na spojení domácího a zahraničního vojska. Jak jsme si však dokázali, armáda samotná byla budována na základě legií a to zejména ruských. Celkově byl podíl legionářů v armádě v prvních letech po demobilizaci vyšší, než uvádí oficiální statistiky, které máme k dispozici pouze od roku 1922. Počet legionářů, kteří nastoupili službu vojáků z povolání v československé armádě, se pohyboval okolo deseti procent. Jejich profesionální předpoklady však nebyli takové, aby se o ně mohla armáda plně opřít, což se velmi záhy ukázalo. Hlavně z tohoto důvodu došlo v průběhu dvacátých let 20. století k výraznému snížení počtu legionářů v armádě. Vzhledem k množství legionářů a jejich předpokladům zůstat ve služebním poměru v Československé armádě bylo v armádě maximální množství legionářů, jaké za dané situace mohlo vstoupit, tak aby si armáda zachovala akceschopnost a jistou úroveň.

Abstract:

The way legions and legionnaires have been viewed has changed considerably over the years: from respect before World War II to semi oblivion and ideology reflections during the dictatorial Communist era to a sort of restoration and a scholarly approach to unveiling this theme in modern Czech historiography. The subject of legionnaires and legions has received quite a good treatment, in terms of both the scope of addressed topics and the profundity of historical findings. The Czechoslovak Foreign Army is a delight to a historian. Nonetheless, a number of topics remain unopened and other topics allow different methods and perspectives to be employed. At first glance, the title of this thesis may appear to indicate that this is a great topic that has already been discussed a number of times and to a sufficient extent; however, this is not the case from the point of view of a statistical analysis. When we were collecting data for the actual research and comparing official statistics to determine the number of legionnaires in the Czechoslovak Army, an analysis of a sample of 382 legionnaires to be examined yielded very interesting results. We found out that Russian legionnaires’ ranks changed to a large extent when they left captivity for a legion. As many as 41% of non commissioned officers were stripped of their ranks and the percentage was as much as 50% as regards officers. This finding corresponds to the nature of the legion as a revolutionary army, which is especially the case with the Russian legion. As regards French and Italian legions, those changes were negligible. These findings also correspond to the condition and atmosphere of the Russian legion, where one wanted to get rid of every outmoded thing originating from the monarchy in a typical revolutionary manner. Naturally, not all officers could have been dismissed, even though they were one year volunteers in many cases, because they were for example better qualified to be officers thanks to their education, even if non military education in many instances, compared to the rank and file. The aforementioned findings will need to be extended using a larger sample of legionnaires in the future to draw conclusions from them in a more consistent analysis. Traditionally, the Czechoslovak Army of 1920s and 1930s is described as a legionary army. This tradition was challenged by historical research in recent years and the army was regarded as a combination of a domestic and a foreign army. However, as we have demonstrated, the actual army was built on the basis of legions, Russian legions, in particular. During the early years following demobilization, the overall percentage of legionnaires in the armed forces was larger than that reported by official statistical data, which are only available in respect of the period from 1922. The number of legionnaires who joined the Czechoslovak Army as professional soldiers was around 10%. However, their qualifications were not so good as to allow the army to entirely rely on them, which became obvious quite soon. This was the main reason why the number of legionnaires in the army was substantially reduced in 1920s. Given the number of legionnaires and their qualifications to stay in the Czechoslovak Army, the military had the maximum number of legionnaires that could have been enlisted under the circumstances for the army to remain proficient and competent enough.
