Abstract:

This thesis deals with translation of terminology in EU texts. The thesis discusses problems associated with translating EU terminology and posits that such translation is a discipline on its own as issues non-existent in translation of legal English are present in translation of EU terminology. The thesis explains what terminoogy stands for, how terms and words are dealt with in academic discourse and it shows how translation and terminology are connected. The thesis also discusses Legal English as a Language for Special Purposes, and mentions a brief overview of the context of the EU and European Commission. In order to clarify how complex and specific task translation of EU terminology is, the thesis applies two existing typologies of legal terminology translation to the EU context and discusses where EU terminology converges, or differs respectively. Neology and neonymy are added to the problems explicated in the typologies. In conclusion, translation of EU terminology is presented as a distinctive matter in translation.
