Depicting the space in the medieval chronicles. Cosmas and the continuators

Abstract:

V diplomové práci jsme studovali Kosmovu kroniku českou a kroniky Kosmových pokračovatelů za účelem zjistit, jak autor s prostorem zacházel, jak jej modeloval, a při jakých příležitostech tak činil. Samotnému popisování a hodnocení Kosmova pojetí prostoru, předcházelo rozdělení jednotlivých pojmů do pracovních kategorií s názvy Makroprostor, Sídla, Neobydlený prostor, Fiktivní prostor a Interiér. Tyto skupiny se staly výchozím kritériem k posuzování textů Kosmových pokračovatelů. V Závěru práce jsme přistoupili k vzájemnému porovnání prostudovaných textů a také k drobným exkurzům do Kroniky takřečeného Dalimila a Zbraslavské kroniky. Ačkoli jsme se často setkávali s topografickými názvy sídel, anebo s prostorem jako pouhou kulisou, domníváme se, že jej kronikáři skutečně modelovali, a zároveň spojovali jej se symboly moci, vznešenosti, smrti, tajemnosti, atd. Pro kronikáře také neexistovala ostrá hranice mezi skutečným prostorem a nadzemskými sférami či zjeveními. V textech jsme nenašli rozdíly v krajinné scenérii ciziny a domova, popsání skutečných krás přírody, či detailní popisy architektury, takže imaginaci v dílech nelze přeceňovat. Nicméně motivů svázaných s prostorem jsme i tak shromáždili velké množství a domníváme se, že práce přinesla nové náhledy na problematiku zobrazení prostoru.

Abstract:

In the thesis we studied the "Chronicle of Bohemians" written by Cosmas and the Chronicles of Cosmas continuators. The reason for that was to find out how the author dealt with a space, how he created it and under what circumstances he did it. The description itself of the evaluation of a Cosmas conception of a space preceded the division of individual terms in the working categories called ? Macrospace, Settlement, Uninhabited space, Fictional space and Interior. Those groups became the starting criteria for judging the texts of Cosmas continuators. At the end of the thesis we compared studied texts and we a little bit looked into so called Dalimil´s chronicle and Chronicle of Zbraslav. Although we often encountered with the topographical names of settlements, or with a space as only scenery, we think, that chroniclers really both create and connected it with the symbols of a power, nobility, death, mystery, etc. For chronicles there was no sharp boundary between real space and supernatural spheres or revelation. In the texts we found no differences in landscape scenery of foreign country or homeland, description of real beauty of nature or description of architecture in detail, therefore we shouldn´t overestimate imagination in these works. Nevertheless we gathered a lot of motives connected to the space and we believe the thesis brought new views of issues concerning depiction of the space.
