Chinese and Taiwanese Attitudes towards Getting Married in the Beginning of the 21st Century

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá postojem ke vdávání u mladých žen (ve věku 23-26 let) s vysokoškolským vzděláním z pevninské Číny a Taiwanu na počátku 21. století. Práce zkoumá, jakým způsobem tyto ženy reagují na tlak společnosti, která od nich sňatek většinou vyžaduje a to primárně jako nezbytný první krok k založení rodiny a pokračování v rodinné linii. Kvůli přímé spojitosti manželství s rodinou jsou materiální hodnoty při výběru partnera pro společnost klíčové. Stejně tak jsou pro jednotlivce důležité názory a schválení ohledně jejich partnera od rodičů. Po sociálně-ekonomických a vzdělávacích reformách, kterými si prošla od konce 20. století jak pevninská Čína, tak Taiwan, se výrazně zlepšil společenskoekonomický status žen, přesto kritéria a nevyvážené standardy pro jednotlivá pohlaví při výběru partnera přetrvávají stejná. Sňatek v mladém věku, naplnění tradiční role cudné manželky a dobré matky, tlak od rodičů, dvojitý standard při stárnutí u mužů a žen, tlak vdát se do lepší společensko-ekonomické vrstvy či snaha o rovnováhu mezi vlastní nezávislostí a podporou rodiny a manžela, to jsou překážky, kterým musí ženy v současnosti zpravidla čelit. Práce má za cíl přiblížit čtenářům postoje k uzavření manželství v pevninské Číně a na Taiwanu a porovnat situaci v těchto dvou regionech, kde se od roku 1949 po ukončení Občanské války mezi komunisty a nacionalisty uplatňují dva odlišné politické a společenské vývoje. První část práce je věnována představení problematiky, popisuje společenskou funkci manželského sňatku v čínských společnostech, jejich očekávání od vdávání žen a tlaku, jemuž obecně ženy v pevninské Číně čelí. Druhá část práce se zabývá analýzou kvalitativního výzkumu, kdy byly se šesti respondentkami, třemi z pevninské Číny a třemi z Taiwanu, provedeny polostrukturované rozhovory. Odpovědi respondentek jsou pak srovnávané s hypotézami vyvozených z první části práce. Výsledky výzkumu ukázaly, že jsou si výpovědi respondentek z pevninské Číny a výpovědi respondentek z Taiwanu většinou podobné.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis looks into the attitude towards getting married of young (in the age of 23-26), university level educated women in mainland China and Taiwan at the beginning of the 21st century. The thesis focuses on the way they react to pressure from society which in most cases demands women to get married as the necessary first step to start a family and to continue the family line. Caused by the direct connection between marriage and family, material values are key in choosing a mate in society’s eyes. They include an importance of the parents‘ opinion and their agreement. Even though women’s socioeconomic status has significantly improved after socio-economic and education reforms which were undertaken in mainland China as well as Taiwan at the end of the 20th century, the criteria and unbalanced standards for individual genders when selecting a mate still remain the same. Getting married at a young age, fulfilling the traditional role of a chaste wife and a good mother, pressure from parents, double standard of aging between men and women, the pressure to marry up to a better socio-economic class or the effort to find a balance between their own freedom and support for family and husband, these are all obstacles which most women currently have to face. The aim of this thesis is to introduce Chinese and Taiwanese attitude toward getting married and to compare the situation in mainland China and Taiwan where after the end of the Civil War in 1949 between communists and nationalists two different political and social developments followed. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to introducing these problematics. It describes the social function of the marriage institution in Chinese socities, their expectations of women getting married and the pressure that women generally face in mainland China. The second part of this thesis deals with analysis of qualitative research, when semi-structured interviews were done with six respondents, three from mainland China and three from Taiwan. The answers of respondents are then compared with the hypothesis deduced from the first part of the thesis. Results of the research showed that the answers of respondents from mainland China and the answers of respondents from mainland China are mostly similar.
