The influence of communication medium on group identification in the context of videoconferencing

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je ověřit, zda se ve spolupracující skupině předem se neznajících lidí při komunikaci prostřednictvím klasické videokonference vytvářejí podskupiny na vzdálených komunikujících stranách a zda jsou tyto podskupiny kohezivnější než při komunikaci tváří v tvář. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo celkem 60 osob. V provedeném experimentu skupiny šesti lidí hrály hru, která vyžaduje spolupráci. Členové skupiny seděli vždy po trojicích za dvěma stoly, které byly umístěny buď ve dvou místnostech propojených videokonferenčním zařízením (videokonferenční nastavení), nebo v jedné místnosti proti sobě tak, aby vzdálenost mezi nimi vypadala opticky stejně velká jako u videokonferenčního nastavení (nastavení tváří v tvář). K měření identifikace se skupinou byl použit dotazník identifikace se skupinou, sociometrie, tři specifické otázky a čtyři informace z průběhu hry. Podle výsledků tohoto výzkumu jsou rozdíly mezi identifikací s podskupinou spolusedících a identifikací s podskupinou vzdálených spolupracovníků větší v případě komunikace prostřednictvím videokonference než při komunikaci tváří v tvář. Rozdíly ale nejsou prokazatelné ve všech ohledech, tzn. v některých situacích působí skupina jako dobře spolupracující a kohezivní, ať už komunikuje prostřednictvím videokonference nebo tváří v tvář.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to examine, whether the cooperating group of strangers is divided into subgroups in remote sides and whether these subgroups are more cohesive than in the case of communication face-to-face. Sixty people took part in this study. In the experiment group of six people played cooperative game. Triads of the members of the group were sitting behind two tables, which were located in two rooms connected by video-conference (video-conference setting), or in one room opposite each other and the distance between them seemed the same as the visual distance between tables in the video-conference setting (face-to-face setting). Group identification was measured by group identification questionnaire, sociometry, three specific questions and four information about the course of the game. According to results, there is bigger difference between identification with subgroup of closed coworkers and identification with subgroup of remote coworkers in the case of videoconferencing than in the case of face-to-face interaction. Despite it the differences are not detectable in all aspects, it means in some aspects the group acts as well-cooperating and cohesive one, whether members communicate face-to-face or via video-conference.
