Motherhood as a Form of Rebellion in Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and Sojourner Truth's Narrative of Sojourner Truth

Abstract:

This thesis explores the ways in which the enslaved African-American mothers in the second half of the nineteenth-century America revolted against the slaveholder society of that time. The main objective of this thesis is the analysis of the two literary narratives, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs and Narrative of Sojourner Truth by Sojourner Truth. This analysis focuses more in detail on the slave family dynamics, specifically between the mother and her children, and on how the protective maternal instincts can overlap into the socio-political spheres.

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá způsoby, jakými zotročené matky Afro-Amerického původu v Severní Americe druhé poloviny 19. století kladly odpor vůči tehdejší otrokářské společnosti. Hlavním předmětem práce je analýza dvou literárních narativů, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl od Harriet Jacobs a Narrative of Sojourner Truth od Sojourner Truth. Tato analýza se podrobněji zaměřuje na rodinnou dynamiku Amerických otroků, konkrétně mezi matkou a jejími dětmi, a na to, jak mohou protektivní mateřské instinkty přesahovat do sociálně-politických sfér.
