Czech Americans and their Political and Cultural Legacy

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis aims to introduce the topic of Czech-Americans, people with American citizenship, and Czech roots. Furthermore, it presents and analyzes the literary works of Willa Cather that deal with this topic. In the theoretical part, the immigration waves will be discussed, prominent Czech-Americans will be presented, and how Czechs differed from other nationalities who also immigrated to the U.S. and what legacy Czech immigrants left in America will be discussed. In the practical part, books by author Willa Cather will be presented and analyzed from the perspective of Czech Americans. The books will be My Ántonia and Neighbour Rosicky. The book's historical context, main characters, and themes will be discussed. The thesis will also deal with the realism of these stories and the author's relationship with the Czech people.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je představit téma Čechoameričanů což jsou lidé s americkým občanstvím a českými kořeny. A představit a analyzovat literární díla Willy Catherové, který se tímto tématem zaobírají. V teoretické části budou rozebrány imigrační vlny, představeny medailonky významných Čechoameričanů a bude rozebráno téma jak se Češi lišili od ostatních národností co také imigrovali do USA a jaký odkaz čeští imigranti zanechaly v Americe. V praktické části budou představeny knihy od autorky Willy Catherové a ty budou analyzovány z pohledu Čechoameričanů. Bude se jednat o knihy moje Antonie a Farmář Rosický. A bude poukázáno na historický kontext, hlavní postavy a motivy knih. A práce se bude zabývat i realismem těchto příběhů a jaký byl vztah autorky k Čechům.
