Analytic Philosophy of Religion and the Problem of God's Omnipotence

Abstract:

Anotace Tato práce se zabývá analytickou filosofií náboženství, proudem, který vznikl ve dvacátém století a jejím pístupem k pojmu Boží všemohoucnosti. Filosofie náboženství je kritické zkoumání pojm a tvrzení, která jsou obsažena v náboženství. Jedno z tvrzení teismu je i Bh je všemohoucí. Analýza pojmu všemohoucnosti patí k závažným problémm, jenž stojí v popedí zájmu mnoha autor, jako Alvin Plantinga, Edward Wierenga, Alfred Freddoso a Thomas Flint, a další. V první kapitole je analytická filosofie náboženství zaazena do širšího kontextu filosofie náboženství a analytické filosofie. Jsou pedstaveni nejvýznamnjší badatelé a témata, jimiž se zabývají, jako je problematika Boží existence, Božích atribut a jejich sluitelnosti. Druhá kapitola pojednává podrobn o všemohoucnosti a problémech s tímto pojmem spojených, pedevším známým paradoxem kamene. Jádro kapitoly však spoívá v pedstavení definice všemohoucnosti jako maximální moci (Flint a Freddoso), a definici Edwarda Wierengy. Všichni užívají prostedky analytické filosofie a sémantiky možných svt. Tetí kapitola je zamena na nejvtší problém spojený s Boží všemohoucností, existenci zla ve svt. Otázku formuloval J. L. Mackie a spoívá v tom, jak je možné, že Bh je všemohoucí a dokonale dobrý a pitom existuje ve svt zlo. Tento problém eší Alvin Plantinga, který pedkládá obranu založenou na svobodné vli. Obrana založená na svobodné vli je snaha dokázat, že je možné, aby byl Bh všemohoucí, dokonale dobrý a zárove nebyl schopný stvoit svt, kde by neexistovalo zlo. Cílem práce je seznámit se na píkladu pojmu všemohoucnosti se zpsobem argumentace analytické filosofie náboženství, a pedstavit ji jako jeden z významných smr souasné filosofie náboženství.

Abstract:

Annotation This paper is focused on analytic philosophy of religion, which was established in the twentieth century, and its approach to omnipotence of God. Philosophy of religion is critical reflection on philosophical issues concepts, claims that arise in religion. One such a claim of theism is: God is omnipotent. Many contemporary philosophers, like Alvin Plantinga, Edward Wierenga, Alfred Freddoso and Thomas Flint, are deeply interested in the analysis of the concept of omnipotence. In the first chapter, analytic philosophy of religion is given into the broader context of philosophy of religion and analytic philosophy. There are introduced the most significant authors, and topics they deal with, like the problem of Gods existence, Gods attributes and their consistence, etc. The second chapter treats in detail omnipotence and problems connected with it, especially the famous Paradox of Stone. The heart of the chapter consists in the defining of omnipotence as maximal power, an attempt made by Flint and Freddoso, and the definition by Edward Wierenga. All these authors employ means of analytic philosophy and possible-worlds semantics. The third chapter deals mainly with the most relevant problem in connection with Gods omnipotence. The question was raised by J. L. Mackie when he asked, whether it is possible, that God is omnipotent and in the same time evil exists. Alvin Plantinga tries to solve this problem with his Free Will Defense. Free Will Defence is an effort to show, that it is possible, tha God is omnipotent, wholly good and he is not able to create world without permitting evil. The aim of this work was to get acquainted with the way analytic philosophy of religion treats the concept of omnipotence, and show it as one of the most influent branches of contemporary philosophy of religion.
