Freedom of the press and safety of female journalists in the OSCE and case study Czech Republic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje pojetí a realitě svobody tisku a bezpečnosti novinářek v regionu OBSE. Problematika svobody tisku jako taková je již jednou z tradičních součástí agendy této organizace, aspekt bezpečnosti novinářů a genderový rozměr však nabrala především v posledních letech, a to v návaznosti na reálný vývoj situace v této oblasti, téma je proto velmi aktuální. Práce je dále zaměřena především na vývoj v zemích střední Evropy, v souvislosti s nimiž jsou zkoumány dopady aktivit OBSE v oblasti svobody tisku a bezpečnosti novinářek. Za tímto účelem jsou prostřednictvím analýzy dat nevládní organizace Reportéři bez hranic a obsahové analýzy aktivit Představitele pro svobodu médií OBSE tyto aktivity a jejich dopady zkoumány. Dále je skrze případovou studii zkoumána situace konkrétně v České republice, přičemž vyhodnocována je tímto způsobem úroveň implementace relevantních dokumentů OBSE a další návaznost českých aktivit v této oblasti. Případová studie tak částečně prohlubuje zjištění získaná v hlavní části práce.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the concept and reality of freedom of the press and safety of female journalists in the OSCE region. The issue of freedom of the press as such has already been one of the traditional parts of the Organization’s agenda, the aspect of safety of journalists and gender dimension, however, have been incorporated mostly in recent years, following the real development of the situation in this area. The topic is therefore very relevant. The thesis further focuses mainly on the developments in the Central European countries, in connection with which the impacts of OSCE activities in the field of freedom of the press and safety of female journalists are examined. To this end, through the NGO Reporters Without Borders’ data analysis and content analysis of the activities of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media these activities and their impacts are studied. Furthermore, the case study examines the situation specifically in the Czech Republic, evaluating in this way the level of implementation of relevant OSCE documents and further continuity of Czech activities in this area. The case study thus partially deepens the findings obtained in the main part of the thesis.
