Czech and Slovak Pronunciation of English: Sonority and Articulatory Energy

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá výslovností českých a slovenských nerodilých mluvčích angličtiny, a konkrétně se zaměřuje na sonoritu a artikulační energii v jejich výslovnosti. Cílem této práce je porovnat rozdíly mezi těmito aspekty v anglickém, českém a slovenském jazyce a zjistit, do jaké míry ovlivňují zvyklosti v mateřském jazyce mluvčích jejich anglickou výslovnost. Teoretická část popisuje hlavní oblasti, ve kterých mluvčí chybují: aspirace, desonorizace znělých souhlásek ve finální pozici, asimilace a vázání. Rozdíly v těchto aspektech v angličtině, češtině a slovenštině jsou názorně ilustrovány na příkladech. Výslovnostní chyby českých a slovenských mluvčích často plynou z absence těchto čtyř aspektů anglické výslovnosti v jejich mateřském jazyce. Praktická část práce analyzuje výslovnosti šesti českých a slovenských studentů anglického jazyka, konkrétně míru sonorizace, aspirace a vázání v jejich výslovnosti. Výsledky ukazují, že slovenští účastníci výzkumu mají v těchto aspektech lepší dovednosti.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the pronunciation of Czech and Slovak non-native speakers of English, and it focuses specifically on sonority and articulatory energy in their pronunciation. The aim of this thesis is to compare the differences between these aspects in the English, Czech and Slovak languages, and to ascertain to what extent the habits of speakers’ mother tongue influence their English pronunciation. The theoretical section describes the main areas in which speakers make mistakes: aspiration, devoicing of voiced consonants in final positions, assimilation and linking. The differences in theses aspects in English, Czech and Slovak are explained on examples. Pronunciation errors of Czech and Slovak speakers often result from the absence of these four aspects of English pronunciation in their mother tongue. The practical section analyzes the speech of six Czech and Slovak students of English, specifically the degree of sonority, aspiration and linking in their pronunciation. The results establish that Slovak participants have better proficiency in these aspects of pronunciation.
