Effect of season on disease incidence in calves in a dairy farming system

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo zhodnotit četnost sledovaných, nejčastěji vyskytujících se onemocnění u telat, jako je respirační a průjmové onemocnění v závislosti na ročním období. Pozorování proběhlo ve dvou konkrétních vybraných chovech. Toto sledování bylo prováděno od prosince roku 2022 do prosince roku 2023. Součástí práce je rešerše odborné literatury, která se zabývá charakteristikou, příčinami, diagnostikou a následnou léčbou hlavně respiračních a průjmových onemocnění, nebo zánětu pupečního pahýlu. Dále byla zmíněna prevence onemocnění a kontrola zdraví telat. V praktické části byl sledován vliv sezóny a farmy na četnost výskytu onemocnění u telat. Z ročního sledování byla vybrána nejčastější onemocnění, která se vyskytovala a byla shodná na obou farmách. Podniky byly rovněž porovnány mezi sebou. Byl pozorován statisticky průkazný rozdíl v četnosti výskytu jednotlivých onemocnění pro interakci farma – roční období. Nebyl pozorován vliv farmy na četnost výskytu onemocnění u telat bez ohledu na diagnózu. Výskyt jednotlivých onemocnění se mezi ročními obdobími u jednotlivých farem statisticky průkazně lišil. Mezi nejčastější onemocnění patřily respirační choroby, průjem a zánět pupku.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to evaluate the frequency of the most commonly observed diseases in calves, such as respiratory and diarrhoeal diseases, depending on the season. Observations were made in two specific selected farms. This observation was carried out from December 2022 to December 2023. The thesis includes a literature search on the characteristics, causes, diagnosis and subsequent treatment of mainly respiratory and diarrheal diseases or umbilical stump inflammation. Disease prevention and calf health monitoring were also mentioned. In the practical part, the influence of season and farm on the incidence of diseases in calves was studied. From the annual monitoring, the most common diseases that occurred were selected and were the same on both farms. The farms were also compared one to each other. A statistically significant difference in the frequency of each disease for the farm-season interaction was observed. There was no effect of farm on the frequency of disease incidence in calves regardless of diagnosis. There was a statistically significant difference in the incidence of each disease between seasons for each farm. The most common diseases were respiratory disease, diarrhoea and umbiliitis.
