Roman Catholics under scrutiny: A comparative analysis of individual secularization in the V4 countries

Abstract:

Předkládaná kvantitativně orientovaná diplomová práce analyzuje změny během posledních třiceti let v oblastech věrouky, praxe a v oblasti postojů k vybraným morálním záležitostem u římských katolíků zemí Visegrádské čtyřky. K interpretaci zjištění slouží konceptuální aparát teorie sekularizace Karla Dobbelaera, přičemž samotná tato teorie se stává předmětem kritické reflexe s cílem poukázat na její slabiny. Empirická analýza, která má jednak explorativní povahu a jednak testuje několik hypotéz o faktorech podmiňující míru individuální sekularizace, vychází z dat longitudinálního šetření European Values Study. Za hlavní empirická zjištění lze považovat následující: (1) ať se podíl římských katolíků na celkové populaci sledovaných zemí v průběhu posledních třiceti let vyvíjel jakkoli, celková míra jejich normativní integrace se zásadně nezměnila; (2) proměnné pohlaví, věk a míra urbanizace lze považovat za poměrně spolehlivé prediktory celkové míry normativní integrace, zatímco úroveň vzdělání nikoli; (3) návštěvnost bohoslužeb a věroučnou integraci lze považovat za poměrně spolehlivé prediktory postojové integrace. Většina výsledných zjištění druhotně slouží k formulaci doporučení pro případné budoucí výzkumy v této oblasti.

Abstract:

This quantitatively oriented thesis analyses the changes with respect to beliefs, practices and attitudes to particular moral issues of Roman Catholics from the Visegrad countries during the last thirty years. For the interpretation of the empirical findings, the conceptual apparatus of the Karel Dobbelaere’s secularization theory is employed. The theory is also elaborated in order to point out its shortcomings. Empirical analysis – which is on the one hand explorative and on the other tests several hypotheses concerning the factors determining an extent of individual secularization – is based on the longitudinal European Values Study datasets. The main findings are as follows: (1) regardless of the change of Roman Catholic’s proportion on the whole of population in the studied countries, the overall degree of their normative integration has not changed significantly; (2) the variables like sex, age and urbanization can be considered as the fairly satisfactory predictors of the overall degree of normative integration, except for the educational level; (3) church attendances and degree of believe integration can be considered as the fairly satisfactory predictors of the of the degree of attitudes integration. Moreover, most of the empirical findings serve for the purposes of eventual future studies in this research field.
