Magical Realism in the Character of Alice in Lewis Carroll's and Angela Carter's Works

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se na teoretické rovině zabývá magickým realismem, jeho původem, rozšířením, autory v něm tvořícími, a především jeho charakteristickými znaky. Tyto jsou pak vyhledávány v díle Angely Carter, poté je možná spřízněnost těchto magicko-realistických znaků zkoumána i ve vztahu k dílu Lewise Carrolla. Posledním krokem práce je soustředit se na literární postavu Alenky, která oba zmíněné autory spojuje. Jedná se o díla Alenčina dobrodružství v říši divů a Za zrcadlem a co tam Alenka našla, na druhé straně pak stojí Alenka v Praze neboli komnata kuriozit.

Abstract:

This thesis deals (from the theoretical point of view) with magical realism, its origins, development, authors, and first and foremost with its characteristic. That characteristic is searched for in Angela Carter's work, followed by studying the possible relation between magical realism and Lewis Carroll's work. Finally, the thesis concentrates on Alice as a literary character, which connects both of the mentioned authors. It concerns Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, and Alice in Prague or The Curious Room.
