Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je deskový obraz známý jako Madonna della Clemenza, který je dnes k vidění v kostele Santa Maria in Trastevere v Římě. Raně středověká malba, kterou zkoumám, byla “objevena” na začátku 50. let minulého století pod vrstvami pozdějších přemaleb. Dílo stále vyvolává množství otázek, z nichž řada není do dnešních dnů uspokojivě zodpovězená. Hlavním cílem mé práce je zaměřit se na nejméně zmapovanou oblast, kterou je funkce tohoto obrazu v raném středověku – tedy jakým způsobem byl uctíván a jakým způsobem mohl fungovat v liturgii. Než přistoupím k tomuto tématu, pokusím se shrnout a analyzovat poznatky o dataci malby, na kterou nepanuje mezi badateli jednotný názor, a rozeberu ikonografii malby. Vzhledem ke skromným písemným pramenům o této i o dalších raně středověkých deskových obrazech z Říma, budu v otázce funkce především srovnávat dílčí informace, které máme o fungování mariánských obrazů v raném středověku v Římě, a uvažovat nad tím, jaké místo v tomto širším kontextu zaujímá Madonna della Clemenza.

Abstract:

The subject of my bachelor thesis is the so-called Madonna della Clemenza – a panel painting placed today in the basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. The early medieval painting was “discovered” during restoration works at the beginning of the 1950s under layers of later overpainting. The extraordinary piece gives rise to many questions and some of them aren’t still successfully resolved. I aim to focus on possible ritual functions of the painting in the early Middle Ages. By functions, I mean ways of its veneration and how it could function within liturgical celebrations. Before approaching this topic, I will analyze the facts concerning the dating of the painting, which is a question creating a split in the scholarly community, and I will perform an iconographic analysis. Given the very scarce sources we have about this painting and other Early Medieval panel paintings in Rome, I will approach the question of function by gathering the pieces of testimonies we have at our disposal about the “life” of Early Medieval Marian images in Rome, and by analyzing the place of Madonna della Clemenza within this wider context.
