Effect of selected abiotic factors on the distribution of plant traits in forest vegetation north of Žilina (Slovakia)

Abstract:

This thesis aims at revealing how the vegetation of Veľký Vreteň north of Žilina responds to selected abiotic environmental factors, including the orientation and inclination of the slope or altitude. Two transects leading from the southern to the northern slope and two shorter transects in the west-east direction were sampled by phytosociological relevés. For each recorded species, an ecological indicator value for light, temperature, humidity, soil reaction and nutrients was extracted from the database of Czech flora and vegetation – Pladias. The average ecological indicator value was calculated for each phytosociological relevé. These data were compared and further analysed using ordination analysis performed in R software to reveal main gradients in species composition. Average ecological indicator values were then passively projected onto the ordination diagram. The area was further classified into five vegetation zones using three classification criteria. The results confirmed considerable differences in species composition between the southern and northern slope. The communities occurring on the south-facing slope contained species requiring a higher amount of light, heat and the basic soil reaction. These are, for example, the Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas) or the White swallow-wort (Vincetoxicum hirundinaria). On the contrary, the northern slope is characterized by shade- and cold-tolerant species occurring on wetter and more soils. Some of them, e.g. the Wood sorrel (Oxalis acetosella) or the Nine-leaved Coral-wort (Dentaria enneaphyllos), occur only here. The southern and northern slopes thus represent contrasting environments that determine differences in species composition. An exceptional part of the area is situated near the ridge, where nitrophilous vegetation represented, for example, by the Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) or the Blue elderberry (Sambucus nigra) was found. The results of this thesis show that local environmental conditions are the primary drivers of species composition in this area.

Abstract:

Cieľom výskumu je odhaliť, ako sa na Veľkom Vreteni severne od Žiliny mení vegetácia v závislosti na vybraných abiotických faktoroch prostredia, predovšetkým na orientácií a sklonitosti svahov či nadmorskej výške. Metódou fytocenologických snímok boli vytvorené dva transekty vedené z južného svahu na severný svah a dva menšie transekty v smere západ – východ. Každému nájdenému rastlinnému druhu bola priradená ekologická indikačná hodnota pre svetlo, teplotu, vlhkosť, reakciu a živiny z Databázy českej flóry a vegetácie – Pladias. Pre každú fytocenologickú snímku bola potom vypočítaná priemerná indikačná hodnota. Získané údaje boli porovnané a ďalej analyzované pomocou ordinačnej analýzy vykonanej v programe R, ktorá odhalila hlavné gradienty v druhovom zložení spoločenstiev. Priemerné ekologické indikačné hodnoty boli následne pasívne premietnuté do ordinačného diagramu. Pomocou troch klasifikačných kritérií bolo územie ďalej klasifikované do piatich vegetačných zón. Výsledky potvrdili významné rozdiely v druhovom zložení medzi južným a severným svahom. Na južnom svahu sa vyskytujú spoločenstvá s druhmi náročnejšími na množstvo svetla, tepla a bazickú reakciu pôdy. Jedná sa napríklad o drieň obyčajný (Cornus mas) alebo luskáč lekársky (Vincetoxicum hirundinaria). Naopak, severný svah je typický tieňomilnou, chladnomilnejšou a vlhkomilnou flórou s nižšími nárokmi na pH pôdy. Iba tu sa vyskytuje kyslička obyčajná (Oxalis acetosella) či zubačka deväťlistá (Dentaria enneaphyllos). Južný a severný svah tak predstavujú navzájom protichodné podmienky a väčšina nájdených druhov je viazaná práve na jeden z nich. Výnimočná je časť v blízkosti hrebeňa, kde bola nájdená nitrofilná vegetácia zastúpená napríklad pŕhľavou dvojdomou (Urtica dioica) či bazou čiernou (Sambucus nigra). Výsledky tejto práce ukazujú, že lokálne environmentálne podmienky sú primárnym faktorom riadiacim rozdiely druhového zloženia vegetácie v tomto území.
