Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou ženské nevěry a cizoložství v období 19.st. ve Velké Británii. Zaměřuje se na to, jak viktoriánská doba s tímto fenoménem nakládala, jak ho definovala, jak se na ženskou nevěru pohlíželo a jak se pojetí ženské nevěry odráželo v anglické literatuře 19.st. ve srovnání s pojetím současným. První kapitola je rozdělena do sedmi podkapitol, které detailně popisují viktoriánské období s ohledem na společenské konvence a právní status týkající se manželství a rozvodu, tehdejší představy o mužské a ženské sexualitě a společenské vnímání ženské nevěry jako takové. První kapitola dále umožňuje nahlédnout do reálného příběhu nevěrné viktoriánské manželky včetně důsledků, které ženskou nevěru často následovaly. Druhá kapitola nabízí přehled románů v rámci západní literární tradice v období 19. a 20. st., ve kterých téma ženského cizoložství figurovalo a sleduje vývoj daného tématu až do současnosti. Třetí kapitola projednává ženskou nevěru v kontextu analýzy dvou viktoriánských románů zaměřených na ženskou nevěru a zkoumá hypotézy, vyplývající z prvních dvou kapitol. Závěr obsahuje shrnutí mého výzkumu a dokazuje tvrzení, že navzdory jiné době a podmínkám se motivy, které za ženskou nevěrou stojí, nezměnily.

Abstract:

This dissertation focuses on female infidelity and adultery in 19th century Britain; on how this phenomenon was defined, perceived and dealt with by the Victorians, how the reality was reflected in the late 19th century novel and how the Victorian notion of female infidelity compares and contrasts with our contemporary idea of infidelity today. The first chapter comprises of seven sections that outline an in-depth analysis of the Victorian situation in terms of the social conventions and legal status regarding marriage and divorce, ideas about male and female sexuality, and social perception of female adultery. Moreover, the first chapter allows an insight into a first-hand documented experience of an adulterous Victorian wife and the consequences it induced. The second chapter provides an overview of wifely adultery novel in the Western literary tradition over the period of the nineteenth and twentieth century and tracks how this theme evolved until present. The third chapter discusses female infidelity in the context of a close reading of two Victorian novels that deal with female adultery and examines hypotheses derived from the previous two chapters. The conclusion offers a summary of my research as well as evidence to the argument that, despite different times and circumstances, the motives behind female infidelity remain unchanged.
