Police Violence against African Americans: Black Panthers and Black Lives Matter

Abstract:

Násilí pácháno na Afroameričanech je problémem v americké společnosti od počátku otroctví. Afričtí otroci byli udržováni v této pozici brutálním zacházením a násilím ze strany svých pánů. Během éry Jim Crow bylo s bývalými otroky zacházeno násilně nejen různými hlídkami – předchůdci policie, ale i veřejností. Bití a lynčování bylo součástí každodenního života Afroameričanů, zejména, ale ne jenom, na jihu. Během hnutí za občanská práva v letech 1950 až 1960, diskriminace a násilí páchané na Afroameričanech bylo stále rozšířené. Ačkoli byl boj za občanská práva převážně mírumilovný, v šedesátých letech, poté co byl zavražděn Martin Luther King, Jr., někteří lidé začali pochybovat a obracet se zády k tomuto nenásilnému přístupu. A tak byla v roce 1966 v Oaklandu, v Kalifornii, založena Strana černých panterů za sebeobranu. Primárním cílem této strany bylo vyřešit problém policejního násilí vůči Afroameričanům. Panteři nosili nabité zbraně, což bylo v té době podle kalifornského státního práva legální, a kontrolovali policii. Zejména kvůli tomuto chování byli Černí panteři vnímáni jako násilnická organizace. Nicméně, policejní násilí použité vůči Panterům, stejně jako taktika, kterou používala FBI, aby zdiskreditovala a zničila tuto stranu, hrála pravděpodobně mnohem větší roli při tvorbě a formování organizace, než násilné vystupování samotných Panterů. Hnutí Black Lives Matter vzniklo, podobně jako Strana černých panterů, po četných vraždách Afroameričanů ve Spojených státech, kteří byli zabiti policií. I přesto, že se hnutí objevilo v jiném společensko-politickém klimatu a že některé z jeho cílů jsou odlišné od cílů Panterů, hlavní důvod, který podnítil vznik těchto dvou organizací je shodný, je ním policejní násilí prováděno na Afroameričanech.

Abstract:

Violence carried out against African Americans has been an issue in American society since the beginning of slavery. African slaves were maintained in their position by brutal treatment and violence of their masters. During the Jim Crow era, former slaves were treated violently not only by various patrols – the predecessor of police force, but also by the public. Beatings and lynchings were a part of everyday life of African Americans, especially but not particularly in the South. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, discrimination and violence against African Americans was still prevalent. Although the struggle for civil rights was predominantly peaceful, in the 1960s, after the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr., some people started to question and abandon the non-violent approach. Eventually, in 1966, Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was created in Oakland, California. The primary aim of the party was to address the issue of police violence against African Americans. The Panthers carried loaded guns, which was legal at the time under California state law, and patrolled the police. Particularly because of this behavior Black Panthers were perceived as a violent organization. Nevertheless, the police violence used against the Panthers, as well as the tactics used by the FBI in order to discredit and destroy the party played, arguably, much greater role in the formation and the process of shaping the organization than the violent appearance of the Panthers. Black Lives Matter movement emerged, similarly to the Black Panther Party, after numerous African Americans were killed by the police in the United States. Even though the movement emerged in a different socio-political climate and some of its goals are different from those of the Panthers, the major incentive that sparked these two organizations is identical – police violence carried out against African Americans.
