Vegetarianism in antiquity

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je zmapování přístupu k vegetariánství a podobným stravovacím návykům a také porovnání odlišných pohledů na tyto přístupy ke stravování v období starověku. V práci jsou uvedeny osoby či skupiny osob (většinou představitelé filozofických nauk a náboženských směrů), které se pravděpodobně zabývaly otázkou konzumace masa, jako byli například Pythagoras ze Samu, Lucius Annaeus Seneca, Publius Ovidius Naso, Egypťané, orfikové, buddhisté a hinduisté, zoroastrijci, esejci a prvotní křesťané. Pro podložení tvrzení jsou uváděny tzv. výroky, písemné prameny, na jejichž základě práce dokládá či vyvrací tvrzení. Práce se zaměřuje i na důvody, proč se lidé stávají vegetariány, porovnává starověké a moderní motivace k bezmasé stravě.

Abstract:

The target of this thesis is mapping access to vegetarianism and similar eating habits and also comparison of different views on these approaches to eating in the antiquity. In the thesis persons or groups of people who probably dealt with the question of flesh eating are listed, such as Pythagoras of Samos, Lucius Annaeus Seneca, Publius Ovidius Naso, Egyptians, Orphics, Buddhists and Hindus, Zoroastrians, Essenes and the early Christians. So called sayings, the written sources, are mentioned to support the claims. On the basis of these sayings the thesis confirms or disproves the claims. The thesis also focuses on reasons why people become vegetarians and compares antiquity and modern motivations for vegetarian diet.
