Bowing String Musical Instruments of the Sorbian Folk (Doctoral Dissertation Proposition)

Abstract:

Jedná se o teze disertační práce, která nabízí tzv. komplexní oraganologický obraz obou typů smyčcových chordofonů, které byly užívány v lužickosrbském hudebním folklóru. Jedná se o velké housle (wulke husle) a malé housličky (kwasne huslički). Oba nástroje byly užívány tradičními muzikanty v 18. a 19. století, poté byly pod německým vlivem vytlačeny houslemi klasickými. Jde o nástroje se specifickou konstrukční charakteristikou. Jejich stavba vychází ze středověkých nástrojů rodiny fidul. Specifické je i užívání těchto nástrojů v lužickosrbském hudebním folklóru. Dnes považujeme oba typy lužickosrbských houslí za zaniklé nástroje, tedy takové, které již nejsou aktivně využívány při produkování autentického lužickosrbského hudebního folklóru. Jejich výskyt se nyní omezuje na doslova několik muzeálních exponátů. Současné lužickosrbské folklórní soubory si sice mnohdy nechávají stavět kopie těchto houslí, jedná se však o nástroje, které tradiční lužickosrbské chordofony připomínají jen svým vzhledem; jejich konstrukční charakteristika je zcela jiná a nelze je proto považovat za tradiční lužickosrbské chordofony. Jednotlivé nástrojové typy jsou charakterizovány z hlediska svého tvaru, konstrukce, výroby, výtvarného řešení, intonace, způsobu interpretace, vývoje užívání (včetně současného stavu), terminologie součástí nástroje a projevů souvisejících s jeho užíváním. Jsou zde rovněž vyhodnoceny veškeré relevantní historické písemné a ikonografické prameny a relevantní literatura. Tato etnoorganologická práce metodicky osciluje v resortu muzikologie a etnologie, dílčím způsobem také v oblasti filologie, sociologie a obecné historiografie.

Abstract:

The dissertation presents a detailed organological picture of two types of bowed string musical instruments used uniquely in Sorbian music folklore. These are grand violin (wulke husle) and little violin (kwasne huslički). Both instruments were used by traditional musicians in the 18th and 19th centuries, and then, owing to the German influence, they were replaced by the classic violin. Both instruments have special construction characteristics. Their construction results from the medieval instruments of the fiddle family. Their use in Sorbian music folklore is also specific. Today both types of Sorbian violin are considered extinct, i.e. not actively used in the production of authentic Sorbian music folklore. Their appearance is now limited literally to just a few museum exhibits. The present Sorbian folklore ensembles often have copies of these violins constructed but these resemble traditional Sorbian chordophones only by appearance; their construction characteristics are entirely different and thus they cannot be considered traditional Sorbian chordophones. The individual types of instruments are characterized according to different criteria: shape, construction, manufacture, design, intonation, manner of interpretation, history of use (including the present state), and terminology both of the instrument’s components and of practice relating to its use. The dissertation surveys all the relevant historical sources, both written and iconographical, and the relevant literature. This ethno-organological work oscillates methodologically between the fields of musicology and ethnology, partially also philology, sociology and general historiography.
