Robotic Kit as a Means of Development of Abstract Thinking among Primary School Pupils

Abstract:

Disertační práce se věnuje oblasti edukační robotiky a využití robotických stavebnic ve vzdělávání. Jejím hlavním cílem bylo zjistit, jaký je aktuální stav výuky robotiky na základních školách v České republice a jak si žáci počínají při řešení úloh s robotickou stavebnicí. Za účelem naplnění hlavního cíle byly provedeny tři dílčí výzkumné studie. V první studii byly analyzovány státní kurikulární dokumenty pro české základní školství. Cílem bylo zmapovat, jaký mají robotické stavebnice potenciál pro začlenění do výuky. Výsledky byly porovnány s obsahem kurikulárních dokumentů Slovenské republiky, abychom zjistili, zda je ve výuce robotiky v těchto dvou historicky spjatých zemích podobné nastavení. Druhá výzkumná studie byla zaměřena přímo na vyučující. Jejím cílem bylo zjistit, analyzovat a popsat stávající stav výuky robotiky na českých základních školách. Studie zároveň mapovala postoje učitelů k výuce robotiky, jejich informovanost, metodické a technické zázemí školy s ohledem na chystané změny v kurikulu. Zvláštní zřetel byl věnován robotickým stavebnicím. Použili jsme metodu dotazníkového šetření. Oslovili jsme vybrané základní školy a víceletá gymnázia po celé České republice. Celkem bylo osloveno 3911 škol, ze kterých jsme získali 360 odpovědí. V rámci třetí výzkumné studie bylo naším cílem zjistit, jak si žáci základní školy počínají při řešení úloh ze školní robotiky. Zaměřili jsme se zejména na úlohy obsahující prvky abstrakce, jejichž náročnost se ve sledu úloh postupně zvyšuje. Vytvořena byla specifická testovací sada patnácti úloh, které byly primárně zaměřeny na pohyb sestaveného robota v prostoru. Vzhledem k povaze úloh museli žáci při řešení zapojovat své abstraktní myšlení. Tento fakt jsme brali na zřetel při volbě cílové skupiny. Na základě poznatků z vývojové psychologie byli zvoleni žáci 6. ročníku, kteří se v rámci svého psychomotorického vývoje nachází na začátku stádia formálních operací. Průběh testování byl podrobně zaznamenáván a byl z něj pořizován videozáznam. Získané výsledky nám napomohly zmapovat, jak jsou žáci schopní adaptace v programovacím prostředí LEGO Mindstorms EV3 bez předchozích znalostí, kde nejčastěji chybují, jak si poradili s různými programovacími koncepty, jak se vyvíjí jejich pozornost a chování v průběhu testování nebo například zda se dají vysledovat některé faktory, které ovlivnily jejich dosažené výsledky. Závěry disertační práce byly zaměřeny především na rozbor počínání žáků v průběhu testování. Na jejich základě byla formulována některá doporučení, která mohou v počátcích usnadnit výuku robotiky a upozorní vyučující na problematické faktory.

Abstract:

This dissertation thesis is engaged in the field of educational robotics and the use of robotic kits in the education. Its main aim was to find out what the current condition of education of robotics in primary schools in the Czech Republic is like as well as how the students work during solving the tasks with robotic kits. To reach the main aim, three research studies were done. In the first study, curricular documents for the Czech primary schools were analyzed. The aim was to map what is the potential of robotic kits to be implemented into education. The results were compared to the content of Slovak curriculum documents to find out if the education of robotics in these two historically bound countries is similar. The second research study was oriented directly on the teachers. Its aim was to find out, analyze and describe the current condition of robotics education in Czech primary schools. The study also discovered the attitudes of robotics teachers in the education, their awareness, methodical and technical equipment of school in consideration of future curriculum changes. a special regard was given to robotic kits. The method of questionnaire survey was used. We addressed the chosen primary schools and lower level of grammar schools throughout the Czech Republic. Altogether we addressed 3911 schools, from which 360 responded. Within the framework of the third study, our aim was to find out how primary school students work during solving the tasks from school robotics. We focused especially on the tasks with the element of abstraction, which difficulty was increasing gradually, in sequence. a special testing kit of fifteen tasks was created. The tasks were primarily focused on the moving of the built robot in the space. Because of the tasks character, students had to use their abstract thinking during the tasks solving. We paid regard to this fact during choosing the target group. Based on the knowledge of development psychology, students of sixth school year, who are in their psychometrical development at the beginning of formal operation phase, were chosen. The process of testing was recorded in detail; video recording was done. The gained results helped us to analyze how the students were able to adapt in programming environment LEGO Mindstorms EV3 without any prior knowledge, where they made mistakes the most frequently, how they coped with various programming concepts, how their attention and behavior during testing was developed or for instance if it is possible to find any factors which influenced their final results. The conclusions of this dissertation theses were focused mainly on the analysis of students work during testing. Based on the analysis results, some recommendations were formulated, which could at the beginning simplify the robotics education and warn teachers about the problematic factors.
