New Orthography in the Belgian Francophone Press

Abstract:

The master´s thesis deals with the use of the new French orthography in the Belgian press. The aim has been to create a comparative analysis that includes a description and analysis of the application of the new French orthography in the Belgian press compared to the use of the traditional French orthography. In the theoretical part, the reform of French orthography from 1990, specific orthographic changes and the adoption of the reformed orthography in Belgium has been first described. Subsequently, qualitative research of opinions on the implemented orthographic reform has been carried out, in selected articles in the Belgian press. This research shows both positive and negative approaches to the reform, and also highlights the problems associated with the reform, such as its confusion, inadequacy and others. Qualitative research is followed by a comparative analysis of selected thirty anomalies using the Sketch Engine program. Their orthography has been examined first in the corpus of the whole Belgian press and then in selected French-written Belgian newspapers and magazines. According to this comparative analysis, we can judge that the dominance of the traditional French orthography continues to persist in the Belgian press, although the use of the new French orthography varies from anomaly to anomaly. The thesis also includes a comparison of these results with the use of the new French orthography in the French and Swiss press. The research was supplemented by the results of a questionnaire, the aim of which was to find out whether Belgians are informed about the orthographic reform and what orthography they use. The results of the questionnaire survey have also proved that most of the respondents do not know about the reform and others prefer the old orthography.

Abstract:

Le mémoire de master porte sur l´utilisation de la nouvelle orthographe française dans la presse belge. L´objectif était de décrire et d´analyser son usage par rapport ? l´emploi de l´orthographe traditionnelle dans la presse belge et de créer ainsi une analyse comparative. Tout d´abord, sont décrits théoriquement la réforme de l´orthographe française de 1990, les changements orthographiques spécifiques et l´adoption de l´orthographe réformée en Belgique. Ensuite, une recherche qualitative est menée sur des articles sélectionnés dans la presse belge qui expriment des opinions sur la réforme orthographique mise en ?uvre. Ces recherches ont illustré les différentes approches de la réforme, positives ou négatives, et ont également mis en évidence les probl?mes liés ? la réforme, tels que sa confusion, son insuffisance ou au contraire les interférences indésirables sur la langue et le déclin de celle-l?. La recherche qualitative est suivie d´une analyse comparative de trente anomalies sélectionnées ? l´aide du programme Sketch Engine. L´orthographe de ces anomalies a été examinée d´abord dans le corpus de la presse belge francophone enti?re, puis dans une sélection de journaux et magazines belges francophones. D´apr?s cette analyse comparative, nous pouvons constater que la domination de l´orthographe française traditionnelle continue de persister dans la presse belge, bien que l´utilisation de la nouvelle orthographe française varie d'une anomalie ? l'autre. La mémoire de master comprend également une comparaison de ces résultats avec l´utilisation de la nouvelle orthographe française dans la presse française et suisse. La recherche a été complétée par les résultats d´un questionnaire visant ? déterminer si les Belges sont informés de la réforme orthographique et quelle orthographe ils utilisent. Les résultats de l´enqu?te par questionnaire prouvent que la plupart des personnes interrogées ne connaissent pas la réforme et d'autres préf?rent l'ancienne orthographe.
