Perception of Power Relationships among University Students: Collective Biography

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje otázce moci a mocenských vztahů v univerzitním prostředí, především situacím zneužití moci. Prožívání moci bylo zkoumáno v kontextu studia na Masarykově univerzitě. V teoretické části jsou představeny teorie šikanování a nezdvořilosti, které bývají považovány za příklady zneužívání moci v organizaci. Práce však prezentuje i kritické pohledy na některé aspekty těchto teorií. Ve většině stávajících definic šikanování se setkáváme s instrumentálním a jednosměrným pojetím moci, vůči kterému je představeno alternativní pojetí a spolu ním také specifická definice zneužívání moci. Východiskem pro empirické zkoumání moci v interpersonálních vztazích je předpoklad, že moc existuje pouze v procesu svého výkonu, přesněji řečeno ve vztazích jedinců k sociálním institucím a v interpersonálních vztazích (Foucault, 2000[1979], 1980, 1996[1982]). Další předpoklad vychází z teorie umísťování (Harré & Langenhove, 1999; Davies, 2008), podle níž na základě znalosti sdílených příběhů či scénářů o konkrétních typech událostí umísťujeme jeden druhého do specifických diskursivních pozic, které vždy nabízejí jen určité možnosti promluvy a sebevyjádření (tamtéž). Zneužívání moci je na základě těchto předpokladů definováno jako umísťování do pozic, které nenabízejí adekvátní možnosti smysluplného sebevyjádření a nelze je tedy považovat za žitelné (Butler, 1997; Davies, 2008). Empirická část byla zpracována metodou kolektivní biografie (Davies & Gannon, 2006; 2009) a spočívá především v analýze příběhů, vypracovaných během kolektivně biografického workshopu. Příběhy zachycují ze tří perspektiv (přihlížejícího, oběti a aktéra) řadu situací nahlížených jako zneužívání moci. Při explorační analýze těchto příběhů bylo odhaleno a pojmenováno 10 kategorií, charakteristických pro kolektivní zkušenost výzkumné skupiny s mocí v kontextu studia na MU. V perspektivě přihlížejícího se ukázala jako významná tato témata: prolínání zkušenosti přihlížejícího se zkušeností oběti; neschopnost přihlížejícího zareagovat; identifikace přihlížejícího s obětí; potřeba nechat zaznít všechny relevantní hlasy a ne/prostupnost akademických sfér. V příbězích vyprávěných z perspektivy oběti následující: bezmoc plynoucí z pociťované nemožnosti se vyjádřit; bezmoc plynoucí z pociťované nemožnosti být slyšen a ohrožení pocitu identity. A v příbězích vyprávěných z perspektivy aktéra: mít navrch a opanovat situaci a neochota respektovat jinakost druhého.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis concerns the matter of power and power relationships in the academic setting, particularly the situations in which power is abused. Experiencing of power in relationships was explored in the context of studies at Masaryk University. The theoretical part of this thesis introduces theories of bullying and incivility which are usually thought of as examples of power abuse in organizations. However, a few critical views of the theories in question are presented here as well. Most of current definitions of bullying are based on the instrumental and one-way concept of power an alternative to which is outlined in the thesis together with a specific definition of power abuse. The empirical research of power within interpersonal relationships is based on the assumption of power existing only through the process of its exercise. To be more specific, power lies in the relations of individuals to social institutions and in interpersonal relations (Foucault, 2000[1979], 1980, 1996[1982]). Another assumption is based on the positioning theory (Harré & Langenhove, 1999; Davies, 2008) which says that we put one another in specific discursive positions that always offer only limited possibilities of utterance and self-expression (ibid.). Based on these theoretical assumptions, the abuse of power is defined as putting others to the positions which do not offer adequate possibilities of meaningful self-expression and cannot be therefore taken as viable (Butler, 1997; Davies, 2008). The empirical part of this bachelor thesis was worked out using the methodology called collective biography (Davies & Gannon, 2006; 2009) and its focal point lies in the analysis of stories elaborated during a collective biography workshop. These stories capture many situations grasped by the narrators as the abuse of power. The stories are made up from the perspectives of an observer, target and perpetrator of the abusive behavior. There were 10 categories discovered and designated during the exploration analysis of these stories. These categories characterize collective experience of the research group with the abuse of power in the context of studies at Masaryk University. Following topics were found significant in the stories told from the observer’s perspective: overlapping of the observer’s and target’s experience; observer’s disability to react; observer’s identification with the target; need for all relevant voices to be heard and im/penetrability of academic spheres. Topics found significant in the stories told from the target’s perspective: helplessness arising from felt impossibility of self/expression; helplessness arising from felt impossibility to be heard and threatened feeling of identity. In the stories told from the perpetrator’s perspective following topics were found significant: having upper hand and being mastering the situation and reluctance to respect other’s otherness.
