Integration strategies of Other World motives in the twelfth-century Christian literature from Wales

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá strategiemi integrace motivů kouzelného Jiného světa, které nevycházejí z křesťanské mytologie, v textech vrcholně středověkých autorů pocházejících z Walesu, jejichž hlavním tématem byla britská a velšská historie a kultura. Zkoumanými prameny jsou Dějiny britských králů Geoffreyho z Monmouthu a Putování Walesem a Popis Walesu Geralda z Walesu, které byly určené latinsky vzdělané elitě. Typy strategií použitých k integraci kouzelných motivů z různých mytologií do křesťanské kultury a literatury mohou být jedním z ukazatelů jejich percepce a také míry akulturace křesťanství ve velšské i britské společnosti, stejně jako akulturace nekřesťanských motivů do britského křesťanského světa.

Abstract:

My thesis examines strategies used for integration of motifs from the magical non-Christian Otherworld, in works of medieval authors from Wales. The main topics of these works are British and Welsh history and culture. My primary sources are Historia regum Britaniae by Geoffrey of Monmouth and Itinerarium and Descriptio Cambiare by Giraldus Camriensis, which were written in Latin and intended for the scholar Christian audience. The types of strategies used for integration of motifs from different mythologies into Christian culture can point towards how favourable was their perception and what level of acculturation reached Christianity in Welsh and British society, as well as the level of acculturation of non-Christian motifs into British Christian world.
