Permeability of road constructions for bats

Abstract:

Veľa štúdií naznačuje, že cestné komunikácie môžu negatívne ovplyvňovať populácie netopierov. Faktory ako fragmentácia a strata domovského okrsku, vplyv hluku a svetla, ako aj priame kolízie netopierov s dopravou môžu mať vážne následky pre tieto zvieratá. Podchody, napríklad mosty, majú potenciál tieto dôsledky zmierniť, avšak nie je dostatok štúdií, ktoré by sa zaoberali vlastnosťami mostov alebo správaním netopierov v okolí týchto konštrukcií. Monitorovali sme šesť mostov v dvoch výškach (3m a 6m vysoké) stacionárnymi zariadeniami nahrávajúcimi echolokáciu v poľnohospodárskej oblasti južnej Moravy po dobu troch týždňov. Monitorovala sa aktivita nad a pod mostami. Zariadenia boli nainštalované aj na referenčných bodoch, aby bolo možné porovnať aktivitu netopierov okolo mostov a v blízkom prostredí. Letová aktivita okolo mostov bola vyššia ako na referenčných bodoch, čo naznačuje, že netopiere sa zhromažďujú pri mostoch. Podľa predikcie, nízko lietajúce druhy (s typickým letom vo výške ≤ 3m) preferovali let popod mostami, bez ohľadu na ich výšku, avšak so znižujúcou sa intenzitou dopravy, viac netopierov mosty nadletovalo. Stredne lietajúce druhy (zväčša lietajúce vo výške ±5m) boli výraznejšie ovplyvnené intenzitou dopravy ako výškou mosta. Vysoko lietajúce netopiere (s typickým letom vo výške ≥10m) preferovali let nad mostami. Pozorovali sme však, že tam, kde bola vysoká intenzita dopravy, aj raniak hrdzavý (Nyctalus noctula) a raniak stromový (Nyctalus leisleri), ktorí typicky lietajú vo výškach 20-30m nad zemou, podletovali nízky aj vysoký most. Preferencia letu pod alebo nad mostom bola zväčša udávaná aj mierou adaptácie na let v hustom poraste.

Abstract:

As many studies suggest, bat populations, can be negatively influenced by roads. Habitat fragmentation and habitat loss, light and noise pollution, and direct animal-vehicle collisions are factors that can have the most severe impacts on these animals. Underpasses, such as bridges, can potentially reduce these effects, but studies evaluating the design of the bridges, and how various bat species behave around these structures are scarce. For three weeks, six bridges of two sizes (3m and 6m high) were monitored in an agricultural landscape in Southern Moravia using stationary echolocation recording devices. Bat activity was monitored above and below the bridges. Monitoring devices were also placed at reference points to compare activity in the adjacent habitats with that around the bridges. Activity around bridges was higher than at the reference points, pointing to bats’ tendency to congregate around bridges. As predicted, low-flying species of bats (typical flight height ≤ 3m) preferred flight underneath the bridges, regardless of their height. However, with a decrease in traffic intensity, more bats flew above bridges. Medium-flying bats (flight ± 5m above ground) were more influenced by traffic intensity than by the height of the bridge. High-flying species (typical flight height ≥10m) preferred flight above bridges. However, at bridges with heavy traffic, even Nyctalus noctula and Nyctalus leisleri (which usually fly 20-30m above ground) preferred flight underneath both low and high bridges. Preference of flight above or under the bridges was usually also influenced by the bats’ degree of clutter-adaptation.
