The Search for Ethical Values - From Moore to Wittgenstein.

Abstract:

Co je dobré? Pokud jasně neodpovíme na tuto otázku, pak se etika jen stěží stane vědou. Jako první tento pojem podrobil důkladnému rozboru anglický filosof G. E. Moore. A protože dobro bylo pro Moora absolutní hodnotou, jež se nenacházela ani v přirozeném světě, ani ve světě metafyzickém, musel jej nakonec prohlásit za nedefinovatelné. Absolutní nedefinovatelné dobro bylo lze poznat pouze skrze intuici. Raný Wittgenstein, který Moorovu definici etiky jakožto ?obecného zkoumání toho, co je dobré?, přebral, chápal tento pojem v poněkud širším smyslu. Poukazoval na to, že výrazy jako ?dobrý? nebo ?zlý? používáme ve dvou různých smyslech ? relativním a absolutním. Jejich relativní význam se vztahuje pouze k určitému předem danému účelu. Soudy relativních hodnot jsou proto konstatováním o faktech. A protože svět je souhrnem faktů v logickém prostoru, nejsou věty etiky možné. Soudy absolutních hodnot se k našemu přirozenému světu nevztahují. Obrazem skutečnosti je věta, a souhrn vět je jazyk. Narážíme na hranice svého jazyka. Věty tudíž nemohou vyjádřit nic vyššího, a proto se nedá vyslovit ani etika. A o čem se nedá mluvit, uzavírá Wittgenstein, k tomu se musí mlčet. Emotivismus raného Wittgensteina byl přirozenou reakcí na Moorův neudržitelný intuicionismus. Na druhou stranu nebyl pro příznivce pozdního Wittgensteina, směřující ke kognitivismu, přijatelný ani tento směr. Rakouský filosof poté zavádí pojem jazykových her a rodové podobnosti. Pojmů může být nyní užito bez jakéhokoli pevného vymezení, neboť mluvení je rovněž jednou ze součástí lidské činnosti. A je to ?životní forma?, která slovům propůjčuje svůj význam. Morální soudy mohou být opět zdůvodňovány objektivně, nikoli však v universálním smyslu. Etika je intersubjektivní. Etika je diskursem mezi mnoha dalšími. A třebaže se pravidla etických jazykových her měnit mohou, vyvěrají z jediného ?pozadí?, jež všichni sdílíme ? planety Země.

Abstract:

What is good? Unless we reply clearly to this question, then Ethics can hardly become science. The English philosopher G. E. Moore was the first to analyze this concept properly. Since the Good was for Moore an absolute value dwelling neither in the physical nor in the metaphysical world, he finally had to declare it as being undefinable. The absolute undefinable Good could only be recognized by intuition. Early Wittgenstein, having adopted Moore's definition of ethics as ?the general inquiry into what is good? understood this term in a slighter wider sense. He was pointing out that we keep using expressions like ?good? or ?bad? in two different senses ? the relative one and the absolute one. Their relative meaning only relates to a certain pre-determined purpose. Judgements of relative value are therefore statements of facts. And since the world is the totality of facts in logical space, there can be no ethical propositions. Judgements of absolute value do not relate to our natural world. The sentence is the picture of reality and the totality of the sentences is the language. We have been clashing against the boundaries of our language. Therefore sentences cannot express anything higher, and that is why even ethics cannot be expressed. And therefore what one cannot speak about, Wittgenstein concludes, one must be silent. Early Wittgenstein's emotivism was a natural response to Moore's unsustainable intuitionism. On the other hand, neither this direction was acceptable for the late Wittgenstein's supporters heading towards cognitivism. Afterwards, the Austrian philosopher introduces the concept of lanuguage games and family resemblance. Concepts now can be used without any defined limitations, because speaking is one of the parts of human activities. It is a ?life-form? which gives words their meanings. Moral judgements may be objectively justified again, however, not in a universal sense. Ethics is intersubjective. Ethics is a discourse among many others. And although the rules of ethical language games may change, they stem from the only ?background? all of us have in common ? the planet Earth.
