Ideologies and Religion in Alejo Carpentier's Work

Abstract:

The main aim of this diploma thesis, which is focused on ideologies and religion, is to describe these doctrines and interpret their reflection in the novels written by a Cuban author, Alejo Carpentier. The first part of this paper characterizes various political ideologies and forms of government, such as Marxism, socialism, communism, fascism, Nazism and Castroism, because the information about these doctrines will serve us when analyzing Carpentier's works. The second chapter of this thesis deals with several religions, including Haitian Vodou, Santería or ?a?iguismo, which can also be found in the novels of the mentioned writer. Moreover, this work will be concerned with the figure of the Havana author and with his attitude towards the regime of Fidel Castro and engaged literature. The last two sections will be focused on the analysis of Carpentier's novels and also a few essays where we will try to use and apply theoretical knowledge from the previous chapters.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce, jež se zaměřuje na ideologie a náboženství, má za cíl zmíněné doktríny popsat a interpretovat jejich odraz v románové tvorbě kubánského spisovatele Aleja Carpentiera. První část práce je věnována charakteristice politických ideologií a forem vlády, jako je marxismus, socialismus, komunismus, fašismus, nacismus a castrismus, jelikož informace o těchto doktrínách nám následně poslouží při analýze Carpentierových děl. Druhá kapitola se zabývá náboženstvími, jako je haitské vúdú, santería či ?a?iguismo, která se v díle zmíněného autora rovněž vyskytují. Dále se diplomová práce soustřeďuje na osobu havanského literáta a na jeho postoj vůči Castrovu režimu a angažované literatuře. Poslední dva oddíly jsou zaměřeny na rozbor Carpentierových románů a také několika esejí, kde se snažíme využít a aplikovat teoretické znalosti z předchozích kapitol.
