The reaction of insect immune system on bacterial stimulation

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o vlivu bakterií na imunitu hmyzu. Hmyzí imunitní systém se skládá především z vrozených reakcí, které jsou vlastní i všem obratlovcům, a proto je žádoucí poznat jejich mechanismus. Všude přítomné bakterie nejsou jen součástí mikrobiomu hostitelského hmyzu, ale také častými stimulanty imunitních drah, které zajišťují homeostázu a obranu organismu. Nejčastější a nejrychlejší buněčnou reakcí na přítomnost patogenu je fagocytóza, následuje syntéza antimikrobiálních peptidů, která spadá do humorální imunitní odpovědi. Důležitým faktorem při setkání hmyzu a bakterie je způsob podání, kdy bakterie přijatá společně s potravou vyvolá jinou reakci než ta injikovaná přímo do hemolymfy. Roli hraje i způsob života hmyzu, jelikož imunita sociálních druhů žijících v kolonii se liší od imunitní obrany jedinců žijících samostatně. Zajímavým jevem je, když se hmyz dokáže lépe bránit při opakovaném setkání se stejným patogenem, tzv. imunitní priming. Cílem této literární rešerše je shromáždit poznatky o interakcích bakterií a hmyzu, utřídit, zda jsou patogenní či symbiotické a popsat průběh vybraných experimentů prováděných za tímto účelem v laboratořích.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the influence of bacteria on insect immunity. The insect immune system is based primarily on innate responses which are also known to be present in all invertebrates, thus is important to understand their mechanisms. Bacteria in their frequent presence are not just parts of microbiome of insect, but they also frequently stimulate immune pathways, taking care of homeostasis and protection of organism. Most frequent and quickest cellular reaction in presence of pathogen is phagocytosis, followed by synthesis of antimicrobial peptides as one of the humoral immune responses. Type of injection, when bacteria are received with nutrition generates different reaction than the one injected directly to haemolymph, is a very important factor in case of encounter between an insect and bacteria. Insect’s way of life also has its role, since immune defence of socially living insects organized in colonies is quite different to immune defence of individuals living individually. Interesting example is when insect is able to protect itself when encountering with the same pathogen repeatedly (also called immune priming). The aim of the present literature review is to summarize findings on interactions between bacteria and insects, categorize those that are pathogenic or symbiotic, and describe laboratory experiments undertaken to investigate these aspects.
