Theory of practice by Pierre Bourdieu in context of environmental sociology

Abstract:

Tématem bakalářské práce je využití teorie jednání Pierra Bourdieu v oblasti environmentalismu. Vybranými texty se snaží co nejšířeji ukázat možnosti daného využití, a následně také rozvinout prostor pro vlastní úvahu a další možné aplikace. Nejdříve téma teoreticky zakotvuje deskripcí environmentální sociologie v pojetí Jana Kellera, Michaela Bella a Johna Hannigana. Zvláštní důraz pak je kladen také na oblast sociálních hnutí, která je nejen vděčným prostorem pro využití Bourdieuovy teorie, ale také podtrhuje roli environmentalismu v současné společnosti. Krátkým uvedením hlavních konceptů jako kapitál a habitus, které environmentalisté využívají nejčastěji, se práce dostává k popisu samotných aplikací. Ty strukturálně rozděluje na aplikace nepřímé, tj. texty, které se o Bourdieovy koncepty pouze teoreticky opírají, ovšem netvoří z nich přímé terminologické konstrukce, a aplikace přímé. Ty jsou popsány v další části práce v podobě konceptů environmentálního habitusu a kapitálu. V poslední části práce nechává prostor dalším úvahám nad možnostmi využití teorie jednání v environmentalismu, nejprve za využití článku Petra Vašáta o bezdomovectví, a dále přímo na základě konceptů popisovaných v knize Teorie jednání.

Abstract:

The main topic of this bachelor thesis is the theory of practice by Pierre Bourdieu and its application in environmental area. By means of selected texts there are demonstrated possibilities of such application in the broadest way. Moreover, the thesis attempts to subsequently develop further possible applications. Firstly the topic is theoretically drawn on description of environmental sociology from perspectives of Jan Keller, Michael Bell and John Hannigan. It lays special emphasis on studies of social movements, which is not only a good area for using Bourdieu´s theory, but it also accents the role of environmentalism in current society. The thesis introduces main concepts such as capital and habitus, which are mostly used by environmentalist, and continues with examples of such environmental applications. These are structurally divided into „non-direct“, which employ Bourdieu´s concepts only in theoretical way, but doesn´t directly construct environmental nomenclature, and „direct“ applications. Such „direct“ applications are represented by concepts of environmental habitus and environmental capital. In the last part of the work it lets some space for further considerations about possibilites of using theory of practice in environmentalism. Firstly by using a paper by Petr Vašát about homelessness, and then directly by using concepts described in Bourdieu´s Raisons pratiques.
