Vicious Cycles: The Pessimism of Revolutions in V for Vendetta and Essential Judge Dredd: America

Abstract:

Tato práce si klade za cíl tvrdit, že povahu revolucí prezentovaných v přelomové sérii komiksů z 80. let pocházejících z V jako Vendeta a Essential Judge Dredd: America, lze číst v konečném důsledku jako pesimistické. Práce ukazuje, že prostřednictvím kruhové struktury a opakování cyklů obě díla zdůrazňují pesimistický pohled na protest a revoluci za dystopických autoritářských režimů způsobem navrženým tak, aby podtrhl apel na svobodu a demokracii, kterým čelila Británie a Amerika za vlády Thatcherové a Reagana. Opakující se cykly protestu a revoluce a reciproční cykly násilí jsou zkoumány spolu s hloubkovými analýzami klíčových postav, jejich činů a motivací. Závěry práce poskytují nový pohled na tato dvě díla tím, že argumentují proti existujícímu omezenému výzkumu povahy a perspektivy revoluce ve V jako Vendetta a poskytují některé z prvních kritik sbírky příběhů Essential Judge Dredd: America ve vědeckém výzkumu.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to argue that the nature of the revolutions presented in the landmark 1980s comic book series collected in V for Vendetta and Essential Judge Dredd: America can be read as ultimately pessimistic. The thesis shows that through circular structure and repetitions of cycles, both works highlight a pessimistic outlook on protest and revolution under dystopian authoritarian regimes in a fashion designed to underscore the challenges to freedom and democracy faced in Britain and America under the tenures of Thatcher and Reagan respectively. Repetitious cycles of both protest and revolution and reciprocal cycles of violence are explored alongside in-depth analyses of key characters, their actions, and motivations. The thesis’ findings provide a new perspective on these two works, by arguing against the existing limited research into the nature and perspective of V for Vendetta’s revolution and by providing some of the first criticism of the collected stories of Essential Judge Dredd: America in scholarly research.
