Attitudes towards stuttering: A comparison of stereotypes in individuals, who experienced direct contact with a person with stutter and in those, who never met a stutterer

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaobírá postoji k jedinců s koktavostí a naráží na problematiku stereotypizace balbutiků. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a empirickou část. Hlavní témata teoretické práce byla: koktavost jakožto narušená komunikační schopnost, dosavadní výzkumu v oblasti měření postojů k balbutikům, stereotyp koktavosti a možnosti jeho zmírnění. Empirická část dokumentuje průběh kvantitativního výzkumu, v němž jsou pomocí české verze dotazníku POSHA-S měřeny postoje k balbutikům. Výzkumný soubor byl tvořen jedinci z běžné populace, kteří byli rozděleni do tří skupin dle zkušenosti s balbutiky. Právě vliv zkušenosti na postoje respondentů je v práci zkoumán. První skupinu, tvořili jedinci v přímém kontaktu s balbutiky, druhá skupina se skládala z jedinců, jež s balbutiky zkušenost neměli žádnou. Třetí skupina s balbutiky nebyla v přímém kontaktu, ale prostřednictvím videa získala, před vyplněním dotazníku, nepřímou zkušenost spojenou s edukací o koktavosti. Některé aspekty postojů ke koktavosti poukazovaly na stereotypizaci ze strany výzkumného souboru, avšak hlavní proměnná dotazníku POSHA-S, „Celkový skór“, vypovídala o celkovém mírně pozitivním dojmu z balbutiků. Tato proměnná se napříč skupinami signifikantně nelišila. Zkušenost s balbutiky dle výsledků nemá statisticky významný vliv na postoje k nim. Při analýze položek bylo zjištěno, že skór třetí skupiny v proměnné „Přesvědčení o balbuticích“ je signifikantně ze všech nejvyšší. Umožnění nepřímého edukativního kontaktu s balbutiky tedy mělo pozitivní vliv na přesvědčení respondentů, avšak nikoli na změnu jejich reakcí na koktavost.

Abstract:

Main theme of this bachelor thesis is to examine attitudes towards people with a stuttering disorder. The thesis also faces the problem of stereotypes about stuttering. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and an empirical part. The main topics of the theoretical part were following: the disorder of stuttering, previous research in the field of measuring attitudes towards stuttering, the stuttering stereotype and the possibilities of changing it. The empirical part shows quantitative research, in which attitude towards stuttering is measured using the Czech version of a standard instrument POSHA-S. The research group consisted of individuals from the general population, who were divided into three groups according to their experience with stuttering. Effect of this experience on respondent´s attitude is examined. The first group were those in direct contact with a people with a stutter, the second group had no experience with stuttering. The third group were people, who were not in direct contact with a person with a stutter, however they gained indirect experience together with education about stuttering via video. Some aspects of the attitude towards stuttering pointed out stereotypical beliefs and behaviour towards people with a stutter, nevertheless the main variable of the POSHA-S, "Overall Stuttering Score", indicated a slightly positive impression of stuttering. This variable did not differ significantly between the three groups. According to the results, experience with a people with a stutter has no statistically significant effect on attitudes towards them. Although when analysing the items, it was found that the score of the third group in the variable "Beliefs about stuttering" was significantly higher than in the other groups. Allowing indirect educational contact with a person with a stutter, had therefore a positive effect on respondents' attitudes, but not on changing their responses to stuttering.
