The origins and establishment of the Five Star Movement on the Italian political scene.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá jaké jsou hlavní příčiny vzestupu Hnutí pěti hvězd a proces jeho proměny od protestního hnutí k etablované populistické vládní straně. Ekonomická a migrační krize, korupční skandály v nejvyšších patrech italské politiky na přelomu nového milénia vedly ke změně stranického systému a uvolnily místo pro nové politické aktéry. Hnutí pěti hvězd cílilo na frustrované a zklamané voliče, kteří ztratili důvěru v zavedené strany i státní instituce. Na cestě k vítězství ve volbách v roce 2018 prosazovalo pravolevá témata, útočilo na establishment i Evropskou unii a získalo širokou podporu obyvatel napříč celou zemí.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the main reasons behind the rise of the Five Star Movement and its transformation from a protest movement to an established populist ruling party. The major economic and immigration crisis and corruption scandals in the top ranks of Italy's political sphere at the dawn of the new millennium led to a radical shift in the party system and fostered room for new political agents. The Five Star Movement sought to appeal to particularly frustrated and disappointed voters, who became disillusioned by the then established parties and government institutions. Along the path to its triumphant victory in the 2018 general elections, the movement promoted right-to-left policies, overtly attacked the establishment and the European Union and received widespread support of voters across the entire country.
