Regional stereotypes: perception of personality traits in the typical Czech, Moravian and Silesian

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá regionálními stereotypy. Jejím cílem bylo porovnání profilů osobnostních vlastností typického Čecha, Moravana a Slezana. Ve výzkumu byl použit pětifaktorový model jako vztahový rámec pro popis regionálních stereotypů. Celkem 987 vysokoškolských respondentů posuzovalo osobnostní rysy sebe samých a typických obyvatel tří historických českých zemí – Čech, Moravy a Slezska na škálách dotazníku NCS. Prvním cílem diplomové práce bylo ověřit, zda se jednotlivé regionální stereotypy vzájemně odlišují. Výsledky ukázaly, že osobnostní vlastnosti typického Čecha, Moravana a Slezana jsou vnímány odlišně. Prokázán byl také malý vliv pohlaví na jednotlivá posouzení. Typický obyvatel Čech je v porovnání s typickým Moravanem a Slezanem posuzován jako otevřený vůči zkušenosti a svědomitý. Typičtí Moravané jsou pokládáni za extravertní a přívětivé. Dalším cílem diplomové práce bylo zjistit míru shody regionálních stereotypů s vlastnostmi skutečných lidí. Ukázalo se také, že respondenti z různých částí republiky se v percepci osobnostních vlastností typického Čecha, Moravana a Slezana příliš neliší. Srovnání jednotlivých profilů s profilem sebeposouzení však ukazuje, že regionální stereotypy s posouzením skutečných obyvatel tří regionů nekorespondují. Profily vlastností typického Čecha, Moravana a Slezana jsou také odlišné od autostereotypu typického obyvatele ČR.

Abstract:

This diploma work is focused on regional stereotypes. Its aim is to compare the profiles of personality traits in typical Czech (inhabitant of Bohemia), Moravian and Silesian. As a practical framework to describe the regional stereotypes, the five-factor model of personality was used in this research. Altogether, 987 university students were asked to rate the personality traits of themselves, as well as the personality traits in typical inhabitants of three historical Czech regions: Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. The regional stereotypes and self-report were measured on NCS scales. The first aim of this diploma work was to check, whether the particular regional stereotypes differ from each other. The results showed that the personality traits in typical Czech, Moravian and Silesian were perceived in a different way. Furthermore, small gender effect on the particular ratings was demonstrated. The typical Czech, in comparison with the typical Moravian and Silesian, was rated as open to experience and conscientious. Typical Moravians are, on the other hand, considered as extravert and agreeable. Another aim of this diploma work was to discover the correlation between the regional stereotypes and personality traits in real people. It was shown that the respondents from various parts of the country perceived the personality traits in typical Czech, Moravian and Silesian similarly. By contrast, comparison of the particular profiles with the self-rating profile demonstrated that the regional stereotypes do not correspond with the personality traits in real people. Personality traits in typical Czech (inhabitant of Bohemia), Moravian and Silesian are also different from the Czech (inhabitant of the Czech Republic) auto-stereotype.
