Analysis of factors affecting the gender wage gap in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou determinantů mezd pracovníků na trhu práce a jejich vlivem na vznik genderové mzdové mezery v ČR. Cílem a zároveň hypotézou této práce je, zda přetrvává vliv vzdělání jako primární determinant mzdových rozdílů mužů a žen. Empirická část využívá data z výzkumu českého trhu práce společnosti Profesia CZ v letech 2017 a 2018. Regresní analýza je založena na Mincerově výdělkové funkci rozšířené o proměnnou pohlaví. Kromě klasických osobnostních faktorů, jako vzdělání, pracovní zkušenosti a věk, se ve výdělkové funkci vyskytují také charakteristiky zaměstnání, jako odvětví a kraj výkonu práce či velikost podniku. Výsledky analýzy ukazují, že faktory lidského kapitálu a charakteristiky zaměstnání vysvětlují 42,57 % mzdových rozdílů. Zbývající část GPG ve výši 18,14 % zůstává nevysvětlena. Jinými slovy, přibližně čtvrtinu mzdových rozdílů lze připsat rozdílným charakteristikám mužů a žen. Nevysvětlená část GPG tak představuje maximální možnou hranici mzdové diskriminace. Nejsilnějším faktorem, který ovlivňuje výdělky mužů a žen je dosažené vzdělání, které je úzce spojeno s vykonávaným povoláním. Přestože vyšší vzdělání zvyšuje produktivitu pracovníků, následně zisky firem a přináší tak jednotlivcům vyšší výdělky, mzdové rozdíly mezi muži a ženami přetrvávají, neboť ženy jsou z velké části zastoupeny v odvětvích s nízkým mzdovým ohodnocením, což je odrazem jejich volby studijních oborů. Vliv vzdělání jako primární determinant mzdových rozdílů mužů a žen tak přetrvává, neboť je jejich původcem.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of wage determinants of workers in the labor market and their influence on the gender pay gap in the Czech Republic. Its aim and hypothesis is whether the influence of education as the primary determinant of the gender pay gap persists. The empirical part of the thesis uses data from the research of the Czech labor market by company Profesia CZ in the years 2017 and 2018. The regression analysis is based on Mincer earnings function extended by a gender variable. In addition to classic personality factors, such as education, work experience and age, there are also job characteristics in the earnings function, such as sector and region of work performance or company size. The results of the analysis show that human capital factors and employment characteristics explain 42,57 % of the pay gap. The remaining part of the GPG of 18,14 % remains unexplained. In other words, about a quarter of the pay gap can be attributed to the different characteristics of men and women. The unexplained part of the GPG thus represents the maximum possible limit of wage discrimination. The strongest factor influencing the earnings of men and women is education, which is closely associated with occupation being carried. Although higher education increases productivity of workers, consequently corporate profits and brings individuals higher earnings as a result, the gender pay gap persists, as women are largely represented in low-paid sectors, which is a reflection of their choice of fields of study. The influence of education as the primary determinant of the gender pay gap thus persists, as it is their cause.
