Housing estate as a symbol of postsocialism and beloved home: Brno - Vinohrady

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce si klade za cíl zjistit, do jaké míry lze rozsáhlá panelová sídliště zbudovaná za socialistického režimu považovat za symbol postsocialistického města. V rozhovorech se současnými či bývalými obyvateli Brna – Vinohrad se zaměřuje na významové struktury, ve kterých komunikační partneři o svých domovech promlou-vají, a zkoumá tak jejich vztah k sídlišti a způsob, jakým se vyrovnávají s negativními konotacemi sídlištního bydlení. Na rozdíl od dřívějších výzkumů je tak sídliště zkoumáno kvalitativně a z kulturní perspektivy. V rozhovorech jsou identifikovány narativní strategie, které komunikační partneři využívají, spolu s konkrétními motivy a metaforami, které se s pojmem sídliště pojí. Z příkladu Brna-Vinohrad byly abstrahovány atributy a metafory vztahující se k archetypálnímu sídlišti. Práce dochází k závěru, že kategorie domova a postsocialistic-kého symbolu se vzájemně vylučují, tedy že konkrétní panelová sídliště jsou vnímána jako postsocialistický symbol v případě absence silných biografických vazeb. Atributy postsocialistického symbolu jsou potom zdrojem negativních konotací sídlištního bydlení.

Abstract:

The presented work aims to find out to what extent the housing estates built dur-ing the socialist regime can be considered a symbol of the post-socialist city. In inter-views with current or former inhabitants of Brno – Vinohrady, the work focuses on struc-tures of meaning in which the communication partners talk about their homes. Through this it analyses their relationship with the housing estates and the way in which they deal with the negative connotation of living in blocks of flats. In contrast with previous re-searches, housing estates are dealt with quantitatively and from the cultural perspective. In the interviews, several narrative strategies used by the interviewees are identi-fied, together with specific motives and metaphors connected with the concept of hous-ing estates. From the example of Brno – Vinohrady, attributes and metaphors of an arche-typal housing estate have been derived. The work concludes with a finding that the category of home and post-socialist symbol are mutually exclusive, that is to say that concrete housing estates can be considered a post-socialist symbol as long as there is no biographical tie involved. Moreover, the attributes of post-socialist symbol function as a resource of aforementioned negative connotations.
