European Parliament Election (2004 - 2009): Comparative Analysis of Media Representation

Abstract:

Práce analyzuje mediální reprezentaci voleb do Evropského parlamentu v letech 2004 a 2009 v horké fázi volebních kampaní v denících MF Dnes a Právo v porovnání s volbami do Poslanecké sněmovny parlamentu České republiky v letech 2006 a 2010. Za pomoci metody obsahové analýzy jsme se pokusili popsat základní rozdíly mezi způsobem mediálního pokrytí voleb do Evropského parlamentu a poslanecké sněmovny. Pro tento účel jsme využili konceptů popsaných v teoretické části práce: sociální konstrukce reality, agenda setting, framing. Cílem analytické části práce je kvantitativní popis aspektů, za jejichž pomoci byly volby do Evropského parlamentu ve srovnání s volbami do Poslanecké sněmovny zobrazovány, a zda se v českém mediálním prostředí uplatňuje koncept voleb do Evropského parlamentu jakožto národních voleb druhého řádu definovaný Reifem a Schmittem v roce 1980. V této souvislosti jsme analyzovali pozornost, jež jednotlivé tituly volbám přikládají. V případě voleb do EP konstatujeme potvrzení druhořadosti na základě srovnání výsledků analýzy národních voleb. Prostřednictvím srovnání mediálního pokrytí mezi jednotlivými horkými fázemi volebních kampaní jsme došli ke zjištění o prohlubování charakteristik novodobých kampaní (personalizace, ideologická nezatíženost, soutěžní charakter, nepřítomnost hlubších analýz či hodnocení) u obou typů voleb, dynamičtější vývoj v tomto směru však pozorujeme u voleb do EP.

Abstract:

The thesis analyzes media representation of elections into European Parliament in the years of 2004 and 2009 in peak time of election campaigns in dailies MF Dnes and Právo in comparison with elections into Chamber of Deputies of Parliament of the Czech Republic in the years 2006 and 2010. We tried to describe basic differences between the way of media election coverage into European Parliament and the Chamber of Deputies with the aid of content analysis method. For this purpose, we have used concepts described in theoretical part of the thesis: social construction of reality, agenda-setting and framing. The aim of analytical part of the thesis is qualitative description of aspects thanks to which were the European Parliament elections in comparison with elections into the Chamber of Deputies depicted, and if a concept of elections into European Parliament as national elections of second grade defined by Reif and Schmitt in 1980 has been used in Czech media environment. In this context, we have analyzed attention which is devoted to elections in individual dailies. In case of elections into EP, we state confirmation of second-rateness on the basis of comparison of results of national elections analysis. By way of comparison of media coverage between individual peak times of election campaigns we have reached a finding about deepening of characteristics of modern campaigns (personalization, ideological unburdening, competitive characteristics, absence of deeper analyses or evaluations) at both types of elections. A more dynamic evolution in this way has been observed at elections into EP.
