Comparison of age-at-death estimation of adults from dental wear between the original Miles method (Miles, 1962) and its modification (Gilmore and Grote, 2012)

Abstract:

Odhad věku dožití hraje velmi důležitou roli v bioarcheologii, v antropologii ale také ve forenzním kontextu. Pokud známe věk dožití jedince, můžeme dále pracovat s jeho zdravotním stavem, s průběhem jeho života či s důvodem jeho smrti. Odhad věku dožití lze provést u nedospělých i dospělých jedinců. Ne všechny části ostatků bývají dochovány a to způsobuje komplikace při odhadu. Nejlépe se dochovávají zuby, jelikož jsou tvořeny nejtvrdším materiálem v lidském těle. U nedospělých jedinců volíme odhad věku například podle stádia mineralizace chrupu a podle erupce jednotlivých zubů. Dospělí jedinci jsou hodnoceni podle stupně abraze okluzní plochy zubu. Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na odhad věku dožití u dospělých jedinců pomocí stupně obrusu stoliček.Cílem práce je určit shodu mezi odhady věku dožití získaných mmetodou Lovejoy (1985), metodou Miles (1962) a metodou Gilmore a Grote (2012).

Abstract:

Estimated life expectancy plays a very important role in bioarcheology and in anthropology but also in the forensic context. If we know the life expectancy of an individual, we can continue to work with his state of health, with the course of his life and the cause of his death. Life expectancy analysis can be performed with juveniles and adults. Several assessment areas are widely used. Not all of the relics are preserved and this causes complications in stimating. The teeth are form as the hardest material in the human body. For juveniles, age estimate is chosen, for example, by stage mineralization of teeth and by the eruption of individual teeth. Adult individuals are ranked according to the degree of wear on the occlusal surface of the tooth. This work focuses on estimating life expectancy among adults by the degree of abrasion of molars. The aim of the thesis is to compare estimates of life expectancy gained by Lovejoy (1985), by Miles (1962) and by Gilmore and Grote (2012).
