Analysis of causal relationships between selected aspects of the family environment and trait anxiety of middle school-age children

Abstract:

Cílem výzkumu, který má těžiště v kvantitativní metodologii, je analýza vztahů a souvislostí mezi vybranými aspekty rodinného prostředí a úzkostlivostí dětí středního školního věku. Důraz je kladen na subjektivní percepci aspektů rodinného prostředí samotnými dětmi. V rámci výzkumného šetření byl sledován i vztah mezi úzkostlivostí a objektivními charakteristikami rodinného prostředí, jako možnými intervenujícími proměnnými – vzděláním rodičů, věkem rodičů, závažnými negativními krizemi v rodině a rozvedeností rodičů. Dále jsme se zaměřili na školní prospěch žáků a nakonec porovnali průměry dosažených hodnot v jednotlivých školách. Výzkum byl realizován na vzorku 174 žáků základních škol ve věku 9 – 12 let. K výzkumu byly použity metody Škála rodinného prostředí (Hargašová, Kollárik, 1986) pro subjektivní posouzení rodinného prostředí a ŠAD – Škála na měření úzkostlivosti, jako trvalého osobnostního rysu u dětí (Müllner, Ruisel, Farkaš, 1983). V teoretické části jsme se věnovali vymezení stěžejních pojmů vztahujících se k řešené problematice. První část se zabývá rodinou, definicí a funkcí rodiny, úlohou v životě dítěte, vymezuje funkční a dysfunkční rodinu, některé krizové a problémové situace v rodině očima dítěte apod. Druhou oblastí teoretické části je vymezení středního školního věku, vývoj dítěte v této etapě, vztahy mezi rodinou, vrstevníky, školou a dítětem v tomto věkovém období. Třetí oblastí teoretické části je definování pojmů úzkost, strach a úzkostlivost, projevy a formy v různých etapách lidského života, obranné mechanismy, normální úzkost versus úzkostné poruchy, souvislost mezi citovou vazbou rodiče a dítěte, vliv úzkostné symptomaticky rodiny na dítě apod. Výzkumná část vymezuje cíle a hypotézy, použité metody, způsob sběru a zpracování dat, závěrečný popis, diskuzi a interpretaci a závěr. Z výzkumného šetření vzešly nejdůležitější závěry. Dimenze konfliktnost a kontrola v rodinném prostředí mají statisticky průkazné pozitivní vztahy s mírou úzkostlivosti, ale i se školním prospěchem. Dimenze soudržnost a expresivita mají statisticky průkazné negativní vztahy s mírou úzkostlivosti dětí ale i se školním prospěchem. Dívky vnímají své rodinné prostředí jako expresivnější než chlapci. V úrovni úzkostlivosti nebyl prokázán rozdíl mezi dívkami a chlapci. S vyšší mírou úzkostlivosti nesouvisí horší školní prospěch. Dívky ve škole dosahují lepšího školního prospěchu, než chlapci. Existuje statisticky významný vztah mezi objektivní charakteristikou rodinného prostředí – věkem rodičů a úzkostlivostí dítěte. Neexistuje statisticky významný vztah mezi objektivními charakteristikami rodinného prostředí – vzděláním rodičů, rozvedeností rodičů popřípadě další negativní významnou rodinnou krizí a úzkostlivostí dítěte středního školního věku.

Abstract:

The purpose of this research grounded in quantitative methodology is the analysis of causal relationships and correlations between selected features of the family environment and trait anxiety exhibited by middle school age children. Much emphasis is placed on subjective perceptions of the family environment by the children themselves. Besides the main objective, this paper embraces other subsidiary goals emerging from the research findings. They include identifying correlations between objective characteristics of family life – parents‘ education levels, parents‘ age, the incidence of disturbing or traumatic experiences within the family, the divorce rate. The survey was conducted among a sample of 174 students attending elementary school, aged 9 – 12. A scale of different family environments (Hargašová, Kollárik, 1986) was applied for a subjective evaluation of the family environment while a ŠAD scale was utilized in order to measure anxiety as a psychological condition and trait anxiety as a permanent personality trait among children (Müllner, Ruisel, Farkaš, 1983). Only the scale for measurement of trait anxiety was ultimately administered. The theoretical part defines key terminology applied during the reasearch. The first part deals with the family, its definition and fuction, its role in a child’s life, the upbringing of children within the family, as well as with what distinguishes functional from disfunctional families, various disturbing and troublesome situations affecting families seen from a child’s perspective. The second part comprises a definition of middle school age children, the child’s development during this phase, the evolving relationships within the family, with peers, and school. The third part of the theoretical section is devoted to a definition of anxiety, fear and trait anxiety, and their manifestations in different stages of human life, defensive mechanisms, ordinary anxiety vs. anxiety as a psychological disorder, the emotional system, as well as the way the emotional bond between parents and child, symptomatic anxiety within the family and the family environment may contribute to middler school age children’s proneness to anxiety or trait anxiety. The research section defines the goals and hypotheses, the method of data collection and processing as well as the final outline and interpretation of the research findings. Conflict and control in the family environment exhibit a statistically significant relation with the degree of trait anxiety experienced by children as well as their performance in school. Cohesiveness and expressiveness show a statistically significant inverse relation with trait anxiety in children and learning performance. Girls perceive their family environment to be more expressive than boys. In terms of trait anxiety, the reasearch does not reveal any differences between boys and girls. Poor learning performance does not appear to be attributable to trait anxiety. On average, girls achieve better academic results than boys. The research further suggests that objective features of the family environment – parents‘ education, divorce nor any other serious family crisis situation have no statistically significant bearing on middle school age children’s trait anxiety. Parents‘ age has significant relation with children’s trait anxiety.
