Sexism and Misogyny in Two and a Half Men

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce nabízí feministický pohled do populárního televizního seriálu Dva a půl chlapa. Hlavním účelem této práce je dokázat, že tento seriál je sexistický a misogynní, a to analýzou postav seriálu a poukázání na různé způsoby, kterými je sexismus a misogynie zobrazena těmito postavami. První část práce má za účel definovat oba klíčové pojmy, sexismus a misogynie, a také uvést různé způsoby, kterými se tyto jevy projevují. Tyto projevy sexismu a misogynie jsou poté definovány za použitím různých feministických zdrojů. Další tři kapitoly se sestávají z analýz obou hlavních mužských postav, Charlieho Harpera a Alana Harpera, a také těch nejvýznamnějších vedlejších postav, za použití termínů, definicí a znalostí z předchozí sekce.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis offers a feminist view into the popular television series Two and a Half Men. The main purpose of this paper is to prove that the show in question is sexist and misogynistic by analyzing the show’s characters and pointing out the different ways in which sexism and misogyny are portrayed in the show through its characters. The first part of the thesis defines the both key terms sexism and misogyny, as well as listing the ways in which they can be manifested. Those manifestations are then defined using various feminist sources. The following three chapters then consist of the analysis of the both main male characters, Charlie Harper and Alan Harper, as well as the most notable supporting and minor characters, using the terms, definitions and knowledge from the previous section.
