Modal verbs in English fiction

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of expression of modality in an English artistic text. The aim of this work is to evaluate the occurrence and frequency of given modal verbs and their meanings in selected English artistic text. The bachelor thesis is divided into two main parts. In the first theoretical part of the thesis, the types of modality and the meanings of modal verbs in English are presented. The second part of the work is devoted to the practical analysis of modality in the English novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The data obtained from the analysis software Sketch Engine were sorted according to the core modal verbs. Furthermore, the frequency of occurrence of individual modal verbs in text corpora and their meaning were determined. The most numerous verbs were found to be will and can. On the contrary, the verbs might, may, and should appeared the least in the text. Subsequently, English sentences with modal verbs were compared with the Czech translation of these sentences. The results of the thesis confirmed the statements of the authors selected for the theoretical part, both about the frequency of individual verbs and about their translation from English to Czech. In the Czech translation of the book, modality was not represented at all in some sentences or modal verbs were replaced by other grammatical forms.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje tématu vyjádření modality v anglickém uměleckém textu. Cílem této práce je zhodnotit výskyt a četnost daných modálních sloves a jejich významů ve vybraném anglickém uměleckém textu. Bakalářská práce je rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí. V první, teoretické, části práce jsou představeny druhy modality a významy modálních sloves v angličtině. Druhá část práce je věnována praktické analýze modality v anglickém románu Karlík a továrna na čokoládu od Roalda Dahla. Data získaná z analytického softwaru Sketch Engine byla roztřízena dle hlavních modálních sloves. Dále byla stanovena četnost výskytu jednotlivých modálních sloves v textových korpusech a jejich význam. Bylo zjištěno, že nejfrekventovanějšími slovesy byla slovesa will a can. Naopak nejméně se v textu objevovala slovesa might, may a should. Následně byly porovnány anglické věty s modálními slovesy s českým překladem těchto vět. Výsledky práce potvrzují zjištění předešlých studií, jak o četnosti jednotlivých modálních sloves, tak o jejich překladu z anglického jazyka do jazyka českého. V českém překladu knihy nebyla modalita v některých větách vůbec zastoupena nebo byla modální slovesa nahrazena jinými gramatickými formami.
