Attachment and pain: effect of attachment orientation priming on perception of experimentally induced pain intensity

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo experimentálně ověřit vztah mezi citovou vazbou v dospělosti a vnímáním intenzity indukované fyzické bolesti u jedinců bez vlastní zkušenosti s chronickou bolestí. Dosavadní výzkumy sou-vislosti mezi citovou vazbou a fyzickou bolestí jsou založené na korelačních designech, cílem této práce bylo rozšířit dosavadní výzkumy a ověřit směr kauzality vztahu. Výzkumný vzorek tvořilo 57 participantů, nejčastěji studentů vysokých škol ve věku 20-26 let. Samotný výzkum probíhal ve dvou fázích. V první fázi byly zjišťovány výchozí proměnné pomocí dotazníkových metod (ECR-RS, TMMS, CSQ, PCS, GAD-7). Pro druhou experimentální část, navození bolesti, byla využita validovaná metoda pro indukování bolesti - vodní lázně s konstantní teplotou 1,5- 2,5°C. Pro manipulaci s nezávislou proměnnou byla použita technika primingu jisté a úzkostné citové vazby a kontrolní priming neutrální. Byly měřeny tyto závislé proměnné: práh bolesti, tolerance bolesti, intenzita senzorické a afektivní bolesti a katastrofizace bolesti. Výsledky prokázaly kauzální souvislost citové vazby a proměnných souvisejících s bolestí. Priming jisté citové vazby vedl k pociťované menší intenzitě afektivní bolesti a menší katastrofizaci bolesti ve srovnání s primingem úzkostným. Experimentální skupiny se nelišily v intenzitě senzorické bolesti a dosažené toleranci bolesti. Dispoziční míra úzkostnosti ve vztazích se ukázala jako významný prediktor katastrofizace bolesti. U ostatních závislých proměnných se žádný z navrhovaných prediktorů významným neprokázal. Posilující moderační efekt emocionální regulace se ve vztahu citové vazby a fyzické bolesti nepotvrdil. Výsledky jsou diskutovány v kontextu předešlých výzkumů spolu s limity a náměty pro další výzkumy.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to experimentally verify the relationship between the attachment in adulthood and the perception of induced physical pain intensity among the individuals with no own experience with chronic pain. Existing research on the relationship between the attachment and the physical pain has been based on the correlational designs; the aim of this thesis was to expand the existing research and to verify the direction of the relationship causality. The research sample comprised 57 participants, mostly university students in the age group of 20-26. The research itself was divided in two phases. Baseline variables were examined via questionnaire (ECR-RS, TMMS, CSQ, PCS, GAD-7) during the first phase. Validated method of the pain induction – water bath with constant temperature of 1.5-2.5 °C – was used in the second part of the experiment. Priming techniques of secure attachment, insecure attachment and neutral were applied to the manipulation with the independent variable. These dependent variables were measured: threshold of feeling, pain tolerance, sensorial and affective pain intensity, pain catastrophizing. The results proved that there is a causal connection between the attachment and the pain related variables. In comparison with the priming of attachment insecurity, the priming of attachment security led to a lower intensity of sensed affective pain and to a lower level of pain catastrophizing. The research groups did not differ in the sensorial pain intensity or in the reached pain tolerance. Dispositional attachment anxiety showed as a significant predictor of the pain catastrophizing. None of the proposed predictors proved as significant among the other effect variables. Strengthening moderating effect of the emotional regulation did not prove in the relationship between the attachment and the physical pain. The results are discussed in the context of previous findings with the limitations and future research implications.
